I've replaced the hood and deck lid struts and never removed any bolts on a retro. Just removed the clips and installed the new struts.. Sure it was not one of the other nice classics you had?

I mis-spoke (ugh) yes = the struts only require dealing with the clips...
I meant to add do NOT count on one strut holding up the hood or trunk while you install the other; prop those panels open with something until both struts are installed (ask me how I know).

Searching eBay for a decent price on hood/trunk struts, I found a handy tool to hold the lids up while changing the other strut.

Very clever, but a Vice-Grip can achieve the same results without going very far.
One person job, well done.

I tried to use a broom stick too, but it kept crunching the broom, making it useless.
