  • My Experience with a Wingnut

When one of my taillight bulbs went out, I decided it was also the right time to change out the nuts that hold the lamps in place with wing-nuts (I've done the same thing on my 2 previous Birds). The passenger side main nut was hard to extract (over-tightened), so I had to purchase an extra deep socket to remove it, and once done, it was a piece of cake. Then came the wing-nuts.

I went to our local Ace Hardware where we've shopped for 30+ years...they (usually) have everything we need. I waited to get a floor staff member to help me - I knew the nut was metric (M6 x 1.0 is the exact size) from previous experience. I was unable to find the exact size wing-nut so the cashier called for a staff member to help (they were ALWAYS so friendly in the past).

Well, this Ace member was RUDE, very rude. He basically treated me as if I was stupid ("How do you know you even need a wing nut?") and ("Do you even know what a wing-nut looks like?"), and that I didn't know what I was talking about ("How do you know it's metric?"). He only had one wing-nut left that size, and told me, "...the price is $5". I felt I was "stuck", so I took the wing-nut, but on my way to the cash register, a customer who overheard the conversation, told me, "Go to Mark's Bolts and Nuts and get the one you're missing from them." (a local bolt and nut house not 10 minutes from me - all they carry is bolts and nuts - I didn't even know they existed until this customer told me about them).

I paid for the $5 wing-nut, and determined that today I'd go to Mark's Bolts and Nuts to get the 2nd wing-nut. So, after leaving the gym this morning, I drove over to Mark's B/N and showed the guy the nut I was trying to replace and told him the size, but I wanted it in a wing nut. He said, "No problem." ...went and got it and brought it to the register. He rang it up and said, "That will be 25 cents." I about hit the floor.

I told him about my experience with the Ace staff person and he just shook his head...and he said, "You should get you money back." I agreed, and asked him, "Could I get another one to replace the one I'm taking back to Ace?" He said, "Sure." and went and got a 2nd one...then when I went to give him another quarter, he said, "No, this one's on the house."

I went back to Ace, got a refund and then told them how horribly I'd been treated by their own resident wing-nut...how they'd also over charged me...and how Mark's B/N hospitality had won me over.

Came home - changed the bulbs in both lamps - installed the two 12.5-cents-each wing-nuts - and then went for a drive.

From the title I thought you were talking about a person....turns out I wasn't wrong ;-)

Customer service at Ace is not what it used to be at Ace, which is too bad, they're not in a position to take on Lowes and HomeDepot. And it isn't only Ace, which is also sad. Still, you did the right thing, they can hardly know how customers feel if they're not told.

The ACE near me has stellar reps - if the young bucks don't know an answer or where a part is they'll get the seasoned guys. All 3 ACE's near me have "thread boards" hanging up where you can thread a nut on (or a bolt in) and determine its pitch and thread - very simple.

HOWEVER, if you need something really oddball then a Fastenal store is the best place to get the item. You may have to buy 10 or 15 but the price will still be cheaper many times than buyng just one at those "boutique" hardware stores (e.g. Lowe's and Home Depot)
BTW - Lowe's gives me a 10% veternas discount and Home Depot does not so I aovid them.

To tighten/loosen wing nuts I use one of these:
      https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-2944-O...%2C452&sr=8-18
Put the regular screwdriver 90* leg in between the nuts wings and use pliers on the other 90* end to tighten/loosen.

WOW, Jim! Sorry to hear about your Ace. Our local store, so far, has been great to visit. Glad you found a better solution!

That’s what I also thought. Relieved that it wasn’t me. Sorry you had to be put through that, Jim.

We have 2 Ace stores close to us in The Villages. Ones better than the other. The good one has excellent service. We also use Lowes for the military discount.

I get a discount at both. Registered at Lowes and use my phone number. At HD I show my VA healthcare card. Lowes also has Veteran parking. Little thing mean a lot, but I still prefer HD.
