I had mine flushed, drained with new filter and pan gasket at 50,000 miles. No problems. I think Ford actually recommends the transmission service at 30,000 miles. I did it more because of the age on the fluid than the miles, Previous owner kept good service records and used the dealership for all maintenance, but nothing on servicing the transmission.
My 2002 just had the transmission filter changed and the pan cleaned (61,000 miles), necessitating 7.5 quarts of new ATF to fill up the level. Total capacity is 11.9 quarts.
I figured that was a safer bet than a full flush which supposedly might dislodge debris into the fluid. The dealership said to 'not touch it, leave it alone'. Not knowing the service history before mine, I thought it better to go ahead and at least do the filter and re-fill.
That’s what they did to mine, also found a bad coil and replaced rear pads.
now I need to rig up a hoisting method so I can pull the hardtop off.
so far I’m loving it
You can buy custom hoist rigging online and it occasionally comes up for sale on the forum. Or you can fabricate your own as I did years ago using PVC pipe and nylon tie down straps from Home Depot. My electric overhead hoist came from Harbor Freight for less than $75.00 on sale.
I took the bird into a local Lincoln dealership. I was considering a tranny flush. They gave me a price of $249. I said, "Go for it." and I would wait for them to complete the work. About 30 minutes later, their chief mechanic came out to talk. I said to myself "here comes the upsell." To my shock, he was trying to talk me out of the work. He told me he just got off the phone with Ford engineering and they highly recommended that I forgo the change. He said the Tbirds have a sealed transmission and unless there is a "problem" like slippage or hard shifting to not break the factory seal. He was actually willing to do the work. Just said I'd be better off not.
