  • Looking for a Retro Bird master tech

Does anyone know of a Ford or Lincoln technician in the Pittsburgh/western Pa area with an exceptional knowledge of '02-'05 Retro Birds? My 14,000 mile '03 is giving me fits with the dreaded PO133 and similar codes over and over. All the usual suggested fixes have been tried. Sensors replaced four times etc. etc. It was recently suggested to me that the problem could be in the electronic circuitry, requiring a tech with driveability diagnostic skills and possibly software updates. What I don't need is a tech that was a lot attendant six months ago. Any help will be deeply appreciated !

I have similar symptoms with a different vehicle, a Volvo XC90 T6. Engine light on, code says mass air flow sensor failure. It's not the MAF meter.
A thorough and hours long diagnosis and some internet diddling indicates it's the engine control computer, that solder connections on the board(s)
sometimes fail, causing false error messages. The Volvo FEM is inexpensive and under the hood, much less involved than the 'Bird's FEM.
I simply ignore the messages on my Volvo for now, knowing it's probably running just fine.
It's probably worth having a Ford/Lincoln-Mercury dealer diagnose the problem if you are still concerned.

Did you try cleaning the MAF and replacing the wiring whip on the o2 sensor that is throwing the code? Also check for exhaust leaks. (Sorry, I don't know any mechanics in your area)

I'm sorry to say you may have better luck finding a competent tech/mechanic at a good diagnostic shop. I say this because dealerships often have in-house rules and guidelines that minimize the time and energy a tech can spend on an older vehicle. Even if you state you'll pay the hourly rate for as long as it takes, etc. That said, as mentioned above, you may also have a better chance at a lincoln-Mercury dealer, as they sold more '00-06 Lincoln LS models than ford dealers sold our T-Birds and may have an older mechanic with more experience.
What's a good diagnostic shop??...Ask around where guys send problem cars they can't resolve.

Jon, I have had very good experiences with waterdam auto service in Mc Murray PA. They have a few master technicians that can fix just about anything. If you can drive it, it may be worth contacting them. Waterdam auto service 724-941-9110.
