Joe,
I've developed more of an interest in Route 66 over the past year or so and have been gathering info for a while. There are several Facebook pages dedicated to it. The one I think is best is called "Historic Route 66". The owner of that page has developed a dedicated Route 66 app that many use to navigate the Mother Road. The did an update to it late last year so it should be pretty accurate. It's called "Route 66 Navigation". You can download it for free to help with planning, but there is a fee to get the full navigation features.
Another resource is the "Route 66 EZ Guide" written by Okie Jerry McClanahan. It has great illustrations and gives turn by turn instructions with highlights of the iconic places to see and stay along the route. If you like fold out maps he also has a packet of maps, one for each state, that does some of the same but in less detail. The map series is called "Here It Is". Both the book and maps are available on Ebay or Amazon.
From what I've learned the success/enjoyment of a Route 66 trip depends largely on how many days you try to accomplish it in. Most folks say to really see a lot it has to offer, you need to plan on a 3 to 4 week trip, especially if you have any side trips planned, such as Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and/or Las Vegas, NV. A good rule of thumb is no more than 150 - 200 miles per day at the most. That said it would probably take 5 or more days to do the stretch from Joplin, MO to Amarillo, Texas justice. With 400+ miles in Oklahoma, there are a lot of things to see.
While you may not want to be tied to a tight schedule, if there are specific iconic motels/hotels you want to stay in, then you should make reservations as far in advance as possible. Remember you are competing with people from all over the world for those spots.
We are vary familiar with Rt 66 from Carthage, MO to Amarillo, TX. We have decent knowledge of things as far east as St. Louis to as far west as Kingman, AZ. Illinois and California have not been part of our travels on 66. If you have specific questions, let me know.

I've travelled quite a bit of Route 66 from Kingman, AZ thru to Oklahoma over the years. The area I've visited most frequently was in Arizona since it's the closest to us. I will say that over the years many of the historic places have fallen in to disrepair or have gone away; but there is still a lot to see and enjoy.

Gene, the Cadillac Ranch is just one place of hundreds along the 2200+ mile route. People come from all over the world to experience Route 66, primarily for the nostalgia.
It's hard to tell they were Cadillacs now days.

Hey, we're interested! I used to drive back & forth on Alternate Rt. 66 to high school (Lockport, Illinois) for my senior year. A decade later Shari commuted to her teaching job in (Romeoville, also Illinois) on that same stretch of highway. Is this part worthy of a TBN cruise-in?No, I'd haftra say it's not. New Mexico & Arizona?
Absolutely! ---Will
