    Re: Mean Spirited Review

Gee, other than his review of the TRULY subjective stuff like styling I kinda agree with his review.

OK, so he doesn't like the look of the exterior or the color matched interiors.......hey, that's a matter of OPINION.......as said earlier everyone's got one.

Let's be brutally honest here, beyond his dopey review of the cars appearance, most of the rest is pretty spot on.

Love the car but it is "SOFT" ......you want performance you best look else-where.

I think this reviewer, like many other people who don't now or never did get these cars, is suffering from a mis-understanding of the car's appeal.

It's supposed to be "Soft" and "Comfortable".......sure more power would have been a welcome development but that's not nearly as important as keeping the car comfortable and "relaxed" as Ford described it.

He's DEAD on in his assessment of Thunderbird heritage too.

The cars in between the original two-seater and the new two-seaters really were so different that they should have had a different name. I won't go as far as he did and call 'em all awful some were pretty cool but they just weren't the same car as the 2 seater.

Personally I have to admit........it has always been something I've thought of when-ever I look at the SST shift in my '04.........why didn't ford give us the option of a 5 or 6 speed manual and wouldn't a super-charged version of the base V8 have really been a COOL throw back to the original Super Charged T Bird of the 50s?!!!!!

      Re: Mean Spirited Review

      All:
I have looked high and low at convertibles over the past two years in the $20,000 - $24,000 range. There were many surprising examples that could be had - particularly the Miata. So many of my co-workers (I work for a large company) own Miatas, that they have their own car club - and track days. However, you need serious coin to turn a stock Miata into a track capable car. Quite frankly, the only car that didn't leave me cold was the Thunderbird. Once I opted for the T-bird, it was a matter of the right one at the right price - which eventually happened.

I've read many more reviews from "professionals" than forums on the car, and the consistent theme (in my opinion) seems to be that the T-Bird is a "nice enough" car, but was way overpriced when new for what you got. This created so much more expectation for the car, and many enemies from those that really liked it but could not afford or justify the price. As a Harley rider, I completely understand this mentality. Lots of Japanese bike riders who really want a Harley but can't afford it, will trash Harleys as out of date, over priced, underpowered, mechanically unsound pieces of crap ridden by posers with too much money. This is basically untrue, except a lot of posers with too much money do own Harleys... but that's a different discussion for a different forum.

One mistake many reviewers (and some potential buyers) always seem to make, is building this car up as a "Sports Car". In my mind, I have always looked at the T-Bird as a "Sporty looking" Touring" car - which is a big difference. My expectations of this car is an overnight weekend or three day holiday up in the mountains, top down, stereo on, two duffles in the trunk with a bottle of wine. Is this not what the T-bird is quite capable of? In the previous price range mentioned above, very few cars can touch what the T-bird offers. As an added bonus, it's a (North) American made car, and so unapologetically, that does mean something to me.

Note: I'm not against foreign cars. My wife is happy with her Camry - it's a great car and she can own as many as she wants.
