    Re: Garmin Nuvi 350 Bargain

    John, Lou, & everyone,

Below is the email exchange between Garmin customer service and myself regarding the upgrade. If anyone has bought a Garmin in the last six months and hasn't been able to get the upgrade for free then you should write them. You might want to use the direct product support email address because if you go through the website it is really hard to get through the "frequently asked questions" filter to get your message to them.

    Paul

    **** Dear Paul Thomas,
    ****
**** Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Unfortunately, we cannot
**** control how long a dealer/distributor keeps inventory on hand. However,
**** we do allow free updates for those who purchased units after a certain
**** date (which is usually quite some time before the actual update is
**** released). In your case, you do qualify for the free update and you can
**** get it by going to our webpage www.garmin.com Next tap on the Map tab
**** and then on the Map Update tab. Enter your serial number and you will be
**** able to order the update for free.
    ****
    **** With Best Regards,

**** I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 350 in late June so it is only 2 months old
**** and already out of date. That seems like an extremely poor business
**** decision for the future as I'll probably want to upgrade to a more
**** advanced unit at some point. My memory is short but not that short.

Did you ask them why it can't locate your home?

I'm saving that for after I get the upgrade.

What Garmin is telling you is that if you entered your serial number the web site would have given you the upgrade for free. I am not the slightest bit sure of that. Frankly, it is not worth much of my time to argue with them for less than $70.

Incidentally, Circuit City has the map dvd available for $62 right now. Either on the web site or if you go to a store you can tell them you saw it for that price and they honor it. Just bought it this morning, will try to install later today.

            Joe,

Glad $60-$70 is no big deal to you. I'm sure anyone that can purchase the unit can come up with the money if they want to. I'm just cheap, I guess.

You are incorrect in your assumption about what the email is saying. I had already been to the Garmin website where I got the message that the upgrade would be $69 plus shipping. After a couple of two minute emails that was changed on their end. Time well spent in my mind.

Interesting....I checked before the No. Carolina event and the Garmin site said I had to pay for the update. I just decided to check again and it said I was entitled to the free map update. So those of you that were rejected at first, try again. My hunch is that they were overwhelmed with requests for the free update and maybe their were enough complaints that they are allowing more folks to update. Thats fine with me, I'll take it!

Have you entered the address of the lodge to see if the location is in the map?

Ahhh Lou, my Garmin is all fixed. I found the magic button, "restore" maps, my Garmin is all set to go again. Now if the map update will just get here before the trip to Ozark, I will be all set. I'm sure hoping this new map update will recognize my home address, I'm sure my neighbors are tired of me pulling in their driveway and garage, and hearing me say "Garmin says I live here".

The wife was playing with mine. Then when I went to type in a street it would type the letter of the key above it. If this happens under display the is a choice to recalibrate screen. Touch a few black dots and back in business. Just an FYI

John, my gps would not allow me to put in an address. Before inserting the address you have to type the state, and I could never get it to accept any state, I would type in the first letter of the state and instantly it would say "State not found". I did the recalibrate screen and reset button on the back several times, neither helped. Last night I tried the restore maps button and that took care of it. GPS is working fine now.

Lon, thanks for your input...I was looking at one today, but held off. Since I plan to do a bit more driving now (overcame most of the agoraphobia going to Savannah Thunder), it just might come in handy!!
