Re: My Bird rejected for Dutch roads

As an owner of a "canadian" 'Bird, I know for sure that '02's did not have any "V8" emblem, period. If it wasn't frits who put themon, then it must have been someone before that and the only one I can think of would be the dealer from who Frits bought the car ( like was implying...)
    Claude
P.S: "canadian" 'Birds could not be had with any supplemental lights or chrome wheels either...you had to buy them and install these yourself if you wanted an "original U.S. look" as these were offered in the U.S...Another "canadian" difference was the metric speedometer and odometer (pictured below)...which happens to be just right for Frits in Europe! ...

That is the Speedometer I have Claude.
But I do not have that Star Wars like bended light saber above it...

Go to the above site to see a photo of a '05 with Euro side markers similar to yours but without V8. This one is in Sweden. It is Sep '09 on the thunderbird concepts calendar.

Looking at some pictures from the CTCH. (Dutch thunderbird club, chapter CTCI) and I do not see any of these side marker lights. Is this something new and only required on new vehicles ? There is a '04 or '05 shown with no side lights as well at their 50th celebration. Are you a member of this club Frits ?

                  Hi Martin,
every car on the road in NL needs to have a yearly check and approval after three years old. I am not sure about classics, but it surely is applicable for all newer cars. fact is they approved my car back in 2005 without these lights even when that law was already enforced. But last year they noticed and told me they could not approve unless they install the lights. I could have kept driving the car and even maybe have car approved if garage was willing to. But if you then get caught in an accident insurance will not cover any damage related to that issue. I would not want to be responsible for running over a kid or any person for that matter fi when turning left or right because they could not see any markers.

The car looks fine Frits and you're legal again.

But after seeing the T-Bird on the September page of the Thunderbird Concepts calendar, I would say that I would remove the V8 emblem. Looks cleaner and less busy than having that below the side marker lights; plus as already stated, it wasn't original equipment for a 2002 model anyways. Just my opinion.

In Canada, you can import only the 2002 vettes (and no other late model vettes) because Canada wants 5 mph front bumpers. Other option is to replace the bumper at the cost of $2000+.

I suspect EU rule applies to any and all cars, except perhaps for vehicles with antique plates. Just my 2 cents.

As of June 25, 2008 Canadian bumper regulations have been amended to conform to US & European standards of 2 1/2 mph testing for front bumpers. That makes many more vehicles easier to import but there still may be other item that need to be modified. The main things are daytime running lights, seat belts, seat backs, & child car seat tethers.

I checked the calendar (great one btw ) and indeed it looks better without the V8 badges. Might concider taking them off now

I would remove the V8's and attach one to the right side of the trunk lid .. IMHO

Fritz - as others have stated, it does not look bad, considering what you had to do. I always liked the BMW M3 sidelights.
