      Re: Influence of Gas Prices

Road trip 2008 will emcompass nearly 6,000 miles. Detroit to Savannah, to Glacier, to Seattle, to Portland to the Tetons, to Salt Lake City, to Durango, to Colorado Springs to Nashville and home. July 9 to August 17 on the road. It is the sequal to the 2006 road trip.
I have planned it for 34 years.

I'm taking extra coils and plugs.
      Whatever it takes.

I'm with Ed on this one.

For the last few years, I've factored in costs of gas, lodging, a little (HAH!) more , eating out, duration of the trip, and even the entertainment (excursions during the event).

It wasn't so much of issue in years past...we had fewer events. Now that our members are planning more events annually, I have to pick and choose, and distance is a major factor.

          Re: Influence of Gas Prices

As most of you know for the first 2 years the Raven sat in the garage under a cover as I wouldn't drive her very much.

But after some of the discussions on this forum and unfortunate but tragic circumstances that have befell our core membership family over the years I have started driving both of mine on a regular basis.

Until gas reaches $5 a gallon I plan to drive them both at will.

What am I saving them for? For my cousin's kids to run them into the ground?

Well, Matt at least with the Raven: Becca would and already treasures Money Penny. She told her Dad not to lean on the fender: He might scratch it.

It's not the gas price, its how much vacation time I spread out.

No one working any longer in this family, retired, and am on a fixed income now. Yes, it will make a difference for us.

                  Re: Influence of Gas Prices

The price of gas has already stopped most of what we do. My wife has her own cleaning business and to haul all the equipment takes an F250 at 11 mpg. 25 miles one way to town, five days a week (I ride with her). My Tbird rarely leaves my shop.
If we do get a chance to do anything on a weekend, we take the Harley.

We skipped any vacation last year and doing the same this year. It's not just the cost of the fuel at the pump, it's the cost of everything else going up because of the cost of diesel to truck it. This is just starting to get to the consumer level, from what I've seen. For example, in the last month our dog food went up almost $5 for a 50 pound bag, basic grocery stuff is up around 4 or 5% since a month ago.

Just life I guess. Good thing we have a great house so home is kind of like a vacation.

We have a 7000+ mile road trip from Maryland to Seattle Washington and back that has been planned for several years. As Paul said in a post above, "there's no time like the present to spend your kids inheritance"!

                        Re: Influence of Gas Prices

The cost of gas has take the pleasure out of driving.I use to average 20k-25k a yr. on my vehicles and that was just bumming around.I could never think of leasing ,it would cost to much. Now retired with a good income I drive a lot less.If it hadn't been the trip to N.Y. I have a lot less miles on the '07 Caddy 9k .That trip totaled about 4,800 mi.On the T-Bird which is just about a yr. old i've put on 6k mi.So I'm looking at 11,000 mi without the trip.At times I'll be driving either car and say to myself "where am I going" and I head home all I'm doing is wasting gas. This never entered my mind before but when I fill up and it cost me $45.00 X2 cars I stop and think. Most of my Amex billing is gas , same for Discover. The girlfriend is always complaining ,her employer never thinks to throw her a couple of bucks for gas .Shes a nanny and it requires her to take the little girl to school 17 mi each way 5 days a wk .It's starting to eat in to her expense and yes she has hinted about it but nothing .There are times when I fill her Honda and forget to take the money to help her out.
Check the cost of food ,bread 3.56 a loaf .I feel bad for the working people who have to still go to work and there is no mass transit at least I have a choice I can stay home. Will it stop me from taking trips NO but it sure bites you on the butt when you get the bill .
P.S. the Gov. of Fl. may be looking to suspend the gas tax for the summer.

                          Re: Influence of Gas Prices

I'm currently not working, so gas prices are definitely a bigger consideration than they would be otherwise. The T-bird is certainly not racking up miles right now and I am driving the Prius more and more. My 07 Bird has 7500 miles on it. Seems to be stuck on that!
CatBrd2 is the new license tag! Meowgal was moved to the Prius.

                            Re: Influence of Gas Prices

Just getting to and from work runs me 400 miles a week and usually 2 fill-ups at about $45-$50 a pop, on my little t-bird, since she's my sole means of transportation. I'm definitely thinking and then thinking again if I really need to go those extra places or can I be content to let her sit on the weekends. Lots of times, she just sits, and so do I.
