  • Re: Influence of Gas Prices

    MerlotBlue,
Just to let you know I agree with you on using the octane Ford engineers suggest. It does not make any sense to me to spend the money these Tbirds cost and try and save a few cents on the gas. Especially since most of us don't drive them over 6000 miles a year maybe using 400 gallons a year at 15 mlies per gallon and paying 25 cents more for 93 octane is only going to cost $100 more for a years driving than using regular in my area.

Like I said in my post, I only use premium fuel in my car too. I even posted somewhere the difference in cost between using premium and regular, and that I didn't think the small cost savings was worth it. I just thought MerlotBlue was a little hard on 65TBSTEVE for simply stating his experience with using regular in his car. He said he's been using regular since new, and after 36,000 miles, he hasn't had any problems. As I recall, there have been several Tbird owners post that they use regular in their car with no adverse affects. I'd bet 99.99% of Tbird owners on this site use premium, so this really isn't even an issue.

Therefore, I'm going to let it go, and just enjoy the ride.

Me too........it really wasn't my intention to "ruffle feathers" and I guess I owe an apology if my rebuke of the point he was making seemed too harsh.

If I offended anyone's sense of community I'm truly sorry.

Even propane has had a price increase. Last summer it cost me $12.50 to fill my tank. This morning it cost $16.45.

Today's engines are very smart due to the computers that control the combustion process. 91 octane is the fuel grade Ford required to insure optimum performance. This is because of the compression ratio of the engine. When the fuel ignites before the spark plug fires, the piston is still going UP in the cylinder when the fuel mixture ignites. This PRE-ignition is the knocking sound one hears. The computer then attempts to regulate the timing of the spark to coincide with the fuel exploding too early so as to avoid any engine damage. But, I agree with Ray, why risk a $5000 engine for a 5% savings on fuel? Computers aren't perfect.

I feel for you. I paid $3.89 this morning for 91 octane premium at a local Shell station in the Oklahoma City area. You may have far more to do in Manhattan but the cost of driving our Thunderbird is so much cheaper living in wind blown and hot Oklahoma.

                          Hi there,

Just to keep things in perspective:

Spoke to my dad over in England and their latest price works out at -

                          $9.20/ gallon.

We are going over there in July to visit and we will be hiring a car for two weeks. The price of gas over there is gonna be a major part of our vacation budget. I did ask for the most economical car they had that would fit two full size cases and two grandaughters.

We will probably end up with a Fred Flintstone type car that is all leg powered.

                          All the best, Gordon.

My last trip to England in 1995 I paid $5.25 for fuel and that was my highest price to pay for fuel. I would tell you to get a comfortable car and spend spend for fuel to enjoy England. I did and did 2,000 miles in the one week I spent in England. Most rental vechicle are manual shift and get good mileage. It is hard to find one with A/C but most of the time you do not need A/C in England. Enjoy your trip.

We have to remember that these Mercedes and other diesel cars may be paying more for their fuel initially. However, once there tank is full, they can go at least twice as far on that one tank than our birds before having to fill up again.
                                Gordon.

My birds are parked unless I want to go to a show or cruise in. Neither gets me the mileage that my Super Duty gives... 21MPG. It would be nice to get more of Ford's Diesel offerings in this country. They sell a 7 passenger minivan that gives 44mpg and a diesel Sport Trac that gives 39.9.

We need to drill here and not export any oil or refined products outside our country, while we work on alternatives to using petroleum products. I remember my grandfather telling me that Ford used ethanol in the cars when they were being assembled and delivered and don't forget the diesel engine was orginally intended to run on peanut oil... maybe we could squeeze Jimmy - he's got to be good for soemthing.
