I know it's not good. I've seen it alluded to on this site before, but it's been a while so I don't recall what it means, and it's kinda difficult to do a search on a single letter.

In the last couple of days the transmission has been acting up. Basically it won't upshift until I ease off the gas. If I don't let off the gas then it'll just peg the tach to ~6500 rpm. So I'm assuming that the "E" has something to do with this.

    Yep, it's a tranny issue.

      That was quick. Thanks!

Well, I guess the good news is I've still got some warranty left on it.

Hmm... according to that link, it only affects cars built between 11/18/2002 and 5/17/2003. But according to this, mine was built on 8/4/2003.

Mine does have 64,000 miles on it though.

Paul, I got the dreaded "E" on my '03 Bird when I hit 2,900 miles. Took it to the dealer they reflashed it and its been good ever since.

about 13,500+. This was a known problem in early built '03 models.

                Hi there,

I had the 'E' showing up on our 2003 bird. In my case it was the control valve body that needed replacing. This was causing the auto box to stay in D4 when I had it set in D5. IN effect, it was not using overdrive and I guess this would mean using more gas.

When we bought our 2003 last December, the Ford warranty was out so I bought an independant extended warranty. I had a hell of a time to get the warranty company to cover this as a lot of folks on here probably remember but after quite a lot of perseverence, they did pay up.

They tried to wriggle out of it by saying it was the throttle body that needed replacing and even I knew that the throttle is at the wrong end of the engine to be transmission.

Well, good luck with your 'E' problem. So far, ours has been fine.

                Gordon.
