  • Inflation Nitrogen in tires ?

Does anyone have any information on this ? Will it void out your tire warranty if you inflate your tires with Nitrogen? I was talking with a friend at a Chrysler Dealership today and he said they are now getting request for this and the cost for a set of 4 tires is $195.00.

We put nitrogen in our tires at a cost of $8 per tire ($32 for 4). Then we changed out our wheels to the NM wheels and lost all the nitrogen. The tire company then charged us $6 per tire ($24 for 4).

Are we talking about the same thing?

SixPac's price sounds about right. Discount tire quoted me $8.95 per tire. Sounds like another good reason not to buy Chrysler.

I can't believe using Nitrogen would effect the tire warranty, but I haven't checked.

I was told the Nitrogen just stabilizes the tire preasure, i.e., preasure stays the same whether tire is hot or cold.

I haven't tried it yet. Maybe someone that is actually using Nitrogen in their tires will comment.

Re: Inflation Nitrogen in tires ?

There is quite a long thread on this subject some time ago. In my opinion it is bunk, but some people swear by it. It supposedly stops or retards the rubber from deteriorating. I never had a tire wear out from the inside.

Since air is largely nitrogen, (roughly 80%) the supposed other superiority of nitrogen (that it doesn't leak out as easily as air because the molecules are "larger") is absolute nonsense because if that were true, then the oxygen in the air would leak out faster than the nitrogen and after a few top ups you would essentially have only nitrogen left in your tires. For example--if all the oxygen were to leak out, then you filled up with air, you would then have the original 80% and 80% of the 20% that you lost, which would add up to over 90% nitrogen, which would keep going up each time you topped it up.

Airplanes and some other applications use nitrogen because it doesn't support fire and that is very important in some areas, but not particularly in family vehicles.

I think it is nonsense and a profit center for a dealership. But then again, I am suspicious by nature and I sure could be wrong. Not on my car, though.

If you google nitrogen in tires you will find lots of information, including the fact that it may be false that the nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules. Read up on it, the consensus seems to be that it isn't worth very much, but you will find some ardent supporters.

I agree with Joe and besides I dont like to keep tires on my car when the outside of the casing starts to dry out and crack and that starts happening after a few years. I usually wear them out before that anyway.

Johnny, It won't void the warranty but it will take your pocketbook at that price.

Nitrogen is an inert gas and has been used in Military Aircraft tires for years becuase it doesn't expand or contract with the drastic temperture changes. There are two types of Nitrogen you can buy, water pumped and oil pumped. Water pumped is the purest and is used for purging pipelines and and other Medical and Industrial uses. Oil pumped is cheaper and is what they use in tires. A cylinder of Nitrogen with 2000 PSI probably costs $40.00 and who nows how many tires it will fill. I think it's just another scam.

I vote that that any benefits of using nitrogen are mostly INFLATED, and this is just a "profit center". I am pretty particular about my cars (use Mobil 1 synthetic and always the gas with the factory recommended octane rating, etc.) but I am not buying into the nitrogen hype.

How about helium, would you get better gas mileage because your car would weigh so much less?

Did the nitrogen thing two years ago. The rate was $40 for all four tires.

All my vehicles run nitrogen cost $29.99 for 4 tires with free checks and adds for the life of the tires. And on my Birds and Pony that one heck of a long long time.

I use nothing but the best in my car. I uncovered a Stargate in my basement during remodeling, and I transport to and from the planet Snakeoilarilium. Living there is an advanced civilization of Snakeoilites, and they have perfected gasses and lubricants for automobiles. I think it's why I haven't had a COPS failure or a flat tire yet. I can sell you bottles of their tire gas for $30 a tire, and quarts of their lubricant for $25 each. To keep the Feds off my back and my space travel a secret, I have to package the gas as common air and the lubricant as common oil, but believe me, there is a difference! PM me for details.
