  • Oil Filter Question

I have looked around for a filter for the Bird. I have also searched this forum and others for recommendations.

It seems that Oil Filter Quality is in the eye of the beholder!

I was looking for a microfiber filtering element as some here said that would be the best, but I never found one.

I did however, find a K&N filter No. 1014 for our cars.

Any comments (of the helpful kind) would be welcome.

    Thanks

One of the best filters made, is from an old-line company that has been making filters for many, many years. They make their own filters, and do not outsource their products. The company is "WIX", made especially for synthetic oils, (as well as regular oil) with the very best high quality materials, including microfiber. The filter number for the 3.9L T-Bird engine is: #57302. and you can read all about them on their web-site which is: www.wixfilters.com I have been using these filters for years, including my T-Bird, and will verify that they are one of the best, if not the very best!

Dean - The NAPA Gold filter is a WIX filter. However, I've been sticking with Fords. My research is in line with Donn's - WIX (& the NAPA Gold) always finish towards the top of the list. I put 300,000 on a Ford 3.8 V6 changing the oil every 3 using NAPA gold filters.

After posting this message I went and took a look around - the basis for my research was an article called "Oil Filters Revealed". The person conducting the study has recently updated his article and can be found here --> http://www.knizefamily.net/minimopar...reference.html

Interesting article. I have been using the Purolator Premium Plus on the Bird from the very first oil change and will stick with it til the very end. It looks like it's a good filter and is the very same one that came on the Bird from new with no marking except for saying it was made in Germany.

            Re: Oil Filter Question

Any major brand of filter will give you the protection you need. Allmost any production engine will give you 300,000 miles of service if you maitain it properly. After that, the metals will begin to fatigue and no oil or filter can prevent that from happening. Most of us won't drive our birds that many miles.
My personal choice if still original equipment installed at the Ford dealer. If something does go wrong, your best chance of getting any assistance with be with them. Keep in mind that the Ford dealer's parts carry an 12 month 12,000 mile warranty on both parts and labor, including resultant damage if it is installed at the dealership. Most aftermarket parts only have a 12 month warranty along with a good fight to get anything done.

I agree with Gene......I have an excellent Ford Service Manager that looks after my TBIRD and I trust him to use FORD parts when servicing it.

                  Re: Oil Filter Question

I was under the impression for some reason that the 3.9 Engine in the Thunderbird was Fords answer to GMs Northstar 4.0 V-8 engine. Both being all aluminum blocks, 32 vales and fuel injected. My Northstar that I had in my Olds Aroura took 8 Qt.s of oil and you didn't have to change oil every 3K miles, the onboard computer kept track of the oil life, this is also how my Wifes new Malibu is. We didn't have to get an oil change on it till 6K miles and the computer said she still had 20% oil life. I've been getting my birds oil changed every 3K though. Leroy

Dean, I get them from Advanced Auto, they also take back my used oil for free.
