  • Collector Car Insurance Policy for My PCR

I really don't know if this is going to be news to anyone here or not, but I thought I might as well offer it up, even if it's only going to be of benefit to one member. I suspect that those of you that have both "antique" and retro-birds have already explored this issue, so forgive me.

I've always thought of my PCR as being a collector car, but I never really associated that with the idea of securing collector car insurance for my retro-bird. So I recently looked into it with a number of the well known collector car insurance companies, to include Hagerty. Well, I was surprised to learn that going the collector car insurance route was dramatically less expensive than the standard insurance policy that I have with Allstate.

Hagerty classified the PCR as an exotic category car and offered me the same levels of coverage (liability, medical, uninsured motorist, collision, and comprehensive, etc.) across the board, and furthermore offered zero deductibles in the applicable categories, plus roadside assistance for the life of the policy, and no real mileage limit (although I had to declare an annual estimate that they will not hold me to). Now, I don't know if I was afforded this opportunity because I have one of the special edition retro-birds, or if they'd cover each and every retro-bird.

Most importantly, we settled on agreed value coverage, not the typical book value, so my PCR's value remains the same throughout, or I can ask to increase it. All this for about $400 less than my existing Allstate premium. Keep in mind that I don't use the car as a daily driver and only put about 5K on per year.

The process was very convenient; just a couple of minutes on the phone with Hagerty, online completion of an application, uploading of just one photo, a signature and a scan, followed by an email, and I was covered within about two hours. They even emailed me my new insurance card.

So, for those of you that haven't explored the option, I think it's well worth a little research. Hope this helps someone.

Re: Collector Car Insurance Policy for My PCR

Many car insurance companies offer "Annual mileage discounts" for cars not driven as a daily driver. All I have to do, currently, is fill out a form with the odometer reading every year.
My company matches what I submit to the States records, which records our mileage at inspection time. There are no other restrictions.
When I had Antique insurance, it was very inexpensive but only covered gas station runs and antiuqe car show mileage, so just check the fine print first.

I don't think it was because of being a PCR. I would think all Retro's are covered because they aren't made any more. I wondering if they do business in Florida? After moving down here we found out that not many company's do any longer.

VirginiaPCR, Beware! I checked into this type of insurance when I had my 1970 Corvette Roadster. My insurance company, AIG, wouldn't give me Full Coverage becuase of the cars age, only PL & PD. I checked with the collectors insurance companies and found them to be reasonable but I was only covered to and from an event, not a drive to the store or out to eat. I also have a 1948 Willys CJ2A and AIG wouldn't even give me PL & PD on it, way to old, so I had to get it through Progressive. $149.00 every 6 Mo. I have Multi car coverage with Full Coverage on my 04 Bird, 04 GMC Pick-up and my Wifes 08 Malibu with AIG for about $1450.00 a year here in Indiana. Leroy

Some also insist on an appraisal every year. Especially hot cars, because the value may go up. No appraisal, then it may be a battle. Just a thought

When my wife turned 50, we jointed AARP and now insure all our vehicles with The Hartford. We have our 2 Thunderbirds listed as recreational vehicles and provide them mileage quotes each year. The annual cost to insure each of the 2 Thunderbirds is about $525 each. The cost to insure our 2 daily drivers (a 2004 VW Passat and 2001 Mercedes SLK320) is pretty reasonable too.

I also found Progressive to be a great deal. For my '05 Thunderbird and my '02 Toyota Avalon I pay $1318. anually, (2) $659. payments each year. That is for $500,000 Liability, Property Damage, and un- and underinsured Motorist coverage. $500 deductibles on everything except $0 for glass. There are no limitations on use. I've had Auto-Owners and State Farm in the past and they didn't even come close on cost. I was told by my agent that if your FICO score is above average it will reduce your insurance costs, curious isn't it?

                  Cal,
I have a 32 year casualty insurance background. Your liability coverage ($500,000) is probably not enough in this day and time. Do you have a personal umbrella policy with more coverage? It's really none of my business so please don't answer the question in this thread. It is just something for you to think about if you don't have one.

                        Stan,
I worked for CNA Insurance in National Account/Large Lines commercial Div. with the claims dept. As you know, Allstate bought the CNA personal lines business in the late 90s I believe and after a while renamed it Encompass Ins. - Am I correct? I'm also retired .

                          Leroy/George,

In response to your comments, Hagerty did not require an appraisal in reaching the agreed coverage value. In addition, Hagerty's policy, in my case, does not limit usage to car shows or events. What I do have to declare is that the vehicle is not my primary daily driver, and is therefore not used to commute to and from school/work on a regular basis.

In the end, this subject requires a bit of research on the part of the insured.

Have insured my 2002 with Americn Hobbyist Insurance since 2006.
Agreed value 25K, annual premium $460.00. Their web site is
www.americanhobbyist.com or phone 1-800-396-4835. I use the car very little - less than 5,000 per year. Quite a saving over the $825.00 semi-annual premium I was paying Allstate. Americian Hobbyist advertise as insurers of antique cars, street rod and replicas and modern classics.

                              Ol'Dave,

What coverage do you have on the '02 and if I may ask, what would be the annual premium on that coverage? I just started shopping for insurance for my three vehicles and if I was able to get collector rate for the T-Bird it may be well worth spliting up the cars. I put less than 5M per year on the Bird.

                              Thanks,
                              Ron
