patric, I've seen them without them and they look really weird becuase it makes the front end look unfinished. The holes in the front were they go are like never cut out of the bumper. I can't imagine why anyone would order a car with out them or why Ford would build one with out them but I've seen them. Leroy

I'm sure someone will post the history of these lights for you, then you'll understand.

        Re: supplemental parking lamps

When I bought my car they were called "supplimental lights", and were offered as a no charge option in the US. Many Ford sales people didn't recognize or understand a no charge option, so a few U.S. buyers did not get them.
The cars in Canada did not have them. Over the years some who did not have them have added them.
There is a plastic cover over the hole where they go if the car does not have them.
You'll probably find more at the "porthole authority" site

Canadian EH !. It's not politically correct to have extra lights here.
I think I will polish up a couple of Tin Can Lids and glue them in place so it will look like the American cousins.

Martin, think DavidA beat you to it with his driver's license and aluminum trim.

Though against the law in Canada - not meeting bumper standards - many Canadian owners went "Ford aftermarket" and bought the supplemental lights and put them on. As MATbird says above, the cover is removable. The SPLs couldn't be sold as standard equipment in the US, again, because they didn't meet US bumper regulations, but they could be sold as an "option" and Ford chose to make them a free option for US customers.

Canada`s laws requires that the bumpers do not break in a 5 MPH crash. Because the lights will break they were not installed on Canadian cars. Along with the lights, a new wiring harness had to be bought to make them work.
