    Re: Rear Bumper attachment

I hope my car never needs body work, but if it does I will sure keep Eddie's shop in mind. Way to go Eddie, there are still some good guys out there!

For those interested here is a picture of the spring clips the body shop used to secure the bumper cover to the fender. There is a lip on the fender and a lip on the cover. Once both are put together they have to be secured.

The factory uses a plastic clip but we replaced that with two steel spring clips.

These come in various sizes and are made of spring steel. It is a U-shaped piece with a clip depressed into the center that holds it in place. Some are just clips while others have a hole with a threaded nut on the backside to accept a bolt or self-tapping screw. We used the ones with the holes but there wasn't enough room to get a screw in place so we just used two of the spring clips to hold it to the fender.

There is no number on the clips so I can't tell you any more about them.

          They are called tinnerman fasteners

Speed nuts, 'J' / 'U' type fasteners, nut retainers

            Fix
            Or
            Repair
            Daily

Typical manufacturer reponse to a minor problem they are aware of. Lucky for you to find someone reasonable & helpful...

And the American auto makers wonder why their reputation $ucks...

              Re: Rear Bumper attachment

I hate to say that all American Mfg./ car dealers are bad because some of my experiences with Fords have been good, BUT some others have been pretty bad. I don't see why, after all these years of foreign competition, they can't be consistant (you can get different responses from different dealers for the same issue). Can't they see what works for customer loyalty? Example: The COPs problem - Why doesn't Ford include the 2002s with the COPs warranty? Does that make any sense? Is it that they (dealers & manufacturers) are just so strapped for cash that they cannot make even the smallest concession for the customer? I just don't have to get in arguments about warranty issues when dealing with Toyota, Nissan, Lexus dealers like I have with Ford, Mercury, Pontiac, etc.

                Re: Rear Bumper attachment

my car is in the body shop now getting a new door. The body guy asked if the rear bumper had ever been removed, I told him I had no idea. He said it looked "mal-adjusted". Since it was in for repair and paint, he said he'd have the body guy take it off and re-adjust everything to specs.

....after being rear ended twice, I can tell you, the attachments, clips, etc. are no longer available from Ford.....so repairs became a restoration....
