  • 1967 Thunderbird w/Suicide doors

Anyone have much knowledge or interest in a 1967 Thunderbird with suicide doors? It's been garage kept, dark green w/landau roof, 80k miles, but hasn't been run in a bunch of years. The owner is asking $900 dollars.

I've been thinking about it, but some unexpected expenses have gotten in the way. I can add some photos when they are sent to me.

Could this be a worthwhile investment?

    Thanks

It depends on how much you have to put into it. These 4 door Tbirds were some of the least desirable in the whole history of the nameplate. I have heard horror stories of owners spending large amounts of time tracking down vaccum leaks. It seems that everything ran off of a vaccum on those 67 Birds. From cruise control to wiper motors to headlight doors.
I could see you easily having $10-$20K in the car before you have it road ready. Unless you just love that particular body style and 4 doors you might want to look elsewere for a classic.

According to the NADA Guide for Clasic Collectable cars, this car is worth on the low side $4,450.00, mid range $8500.00, and high end is $14,700.00. Add on 30% to 40% more if it has A/C and the 390 Cu.In. Engine This car MSRP was about $4,600.00 in 1967. $900.00 for this car, with 80,000 miles and if it's not all rusted out, it is a steal. This is a clasic car that, yes, were not real popular in their day but are very rare and collectable now. I had a 1970 Corrvette convertable, not a real popular car in the late 60s and early 70s, everyone wanted the T-Top model. But now a days the Convertibles bring way more money than the Coupes. I paid $13,000.00 for my Convertible and drove it for 4 years and sold it for $20,000.00 and bought my Thunderbird.

Hard to tell without seeing any photos but $900 seems like a steal unless it's a complete junker.

Marty you're so right. 64-66 Flaire Birds are the same. Thats why I sold my 66 "Q". The 64 I now have, was the base model. THus, power nothing. ie. less vaccum probems. Those door locks were a real hastle on the 66. Don't miss that a bit.

67 might have a big block 428 in it the motor alone is worth 900

That is AWESOME. I would love the opportunity to bring one back to that likings.

I saw a 2-door '66 last year that was selling for $15,000. Seems like this one would be worth more than that if it were in as good condition because of the suicide doors.

I have always liked the 4 door Thunderbirds, my Mom had a 1968 Silver with Black Top and Black Interior. Being my Moms car it was totally loaded and I remember what a classy car it was. I would give anything to have that car now, or many of the other cars my parents had back in the 60's and 70's. My Dad always bought top of the line, loaded cars. He bought me a couple of nice cars as a teenager as well. The Red one in the link a couple of post above is absolutely georgeous.

I guess I am the exception but I have always liked the Gillette Birds as I call them as the grilles always reminded me of my Dad's 60s Gillette electric shaver ...

I don't see how you could go wrong at $900. We pay that for a hardtop and don't blink an eye.

crmpuf, You're right, there were two engines avalible the Z-390/ 315 HP & the Q-428/ 345 HP. And probably if this car has A/C it has the 428 under the hood. Ford identified the 67 Thunderbirds as Tudors and Fordors as they did there cars in the 20s and 30s. Some other popular options that may be on this car were Leather seats ( Black only ), AM/FM Stereo with an 8track tape player, Power antenna, Posi rear end, and Red Stripe or Whitewall tires. If I were going to look at this car the first thing I would inspect is the frame for rust. If the frame is solid, then the car has posibilities. In 2002 Hemmings Motor News picked the 1967 to 1969 Thunderbirds as one of their writer's " Sleeper " choices as good candidates for an explostion in poularity in years to come. Leroy
