For the newer second generation owners (or are they second owner owners?) (have we decided on a demographic title for them, the sort of newbies??)
On a thread, long, long ago on a forum, far, far away, I started a thread titled "Let the Stories Continue" It was modeled after Ford's "Let the Stories Begin" marketing campaign for the, then, new Thunderbird. We vetran members (certainly not "old timers") posted our experiences with folks making comments about our Thunderbirds.
I had not thought about it much. I did have a couple comments during the road trip, but they were quite off hand.
Tonight, I was waiting at a stop light and a car passes me and stops ahead of me in the adjacent lane. The driver backs up, rolls down the window and asked, "Why don't you get historic plates?" And I answer, "Because it's a 2002." Puzzled, the driver looks the Thunderbird over again from front to back. I asked, "Do you think this is a classic Thunderbird?" And he nods yes. I replied that I'd tell my designer friends, they got it just right.
A couple miles up the street, two girls are under a street light at a bus stop and they are waving energeticly as I approach in the Thunderbird. All smug, I'm smiling about how the Thunderbird still has the look, when I notice two huge headlights bearing down on me in the rear view mirror. It was a SEMTA (South East Michigan Regional Transit Authority) BUS. They were not waving at me..they were waving to catch the bus!
Win some... lose some....
