Do not know how it is in other states but in Texas when a car is totalled the insurance company pays you the value of the car (their value) and the insurance company takes the car. Naturally, the insurance company will sell the car for salvage and thus are out only the difference. If you want to keep the car then the insurace company will pay only the delta between the determiend value of the vehicle and the salvage value. Of course, this is not an absolute... I know a guy who his 95 car in excellent condition & extremely low miles was rear ended. Only damaged the bumper but the repair would cost more then the "book" value of the car. The insurance company gave him a check for the value of the car and told him to have a nice day. He kicked in a few bucks and had the car repaired.
