    Re: Response Edge Tires

    Hi there,

Jerry, in your last post you mention how these tires improved the look of the car. I was just curious to know in what way do they look better than other tires?

    Thanks, Gordon.

      Re: Response Edge Tires

Daktari, I think the ResponsEdge looks better on the car, because it appears to be wider and more performance oriented than the OEM Michelins. This is the case, even though it is the same size as the stockl tires. Goodyear uses a more contemporary asymmetric thread design on the ResponsEdge. This approach seems to be replacing directional pattern design and really looks great on the Thunderbird. I always thought the Thunderbird needed a more performance oriented tire to achieve the "relaxed sportiness" the car was created to deliver.

        Re: Response Edge Tires

        Hi there,

Thanks Jerry for that answer. At the moment, we have 24,000 miles on ours with the original tires but they are around 5 years old so it is nice to know these things for when the time comes to replace them.

We recently replaced the Bridgestone tires on our Infiniti FX and went for Yokohama Avids which like you said, the same size as the originals but they do alter the appearence of the car. Now it kind of looks a little chunkier and somehow more solid. Maybe it would be that way with any new tire?....I'm no expert.

        Gordon.

            Re: Response Edge Tires

I was very torn between the Goodyear Response Edges and Bridgestone Turanza Serenitys. Looked at both for a few months to mount on 21 spoke wheels. Due to comments about a bit more harsh ride with the Response Edges and reviews that the Serenitys were silky smooth, quite, and are currently rated the #2 “touring” tire behind Michelin’s Premicy (that do not come in a size for our cars), I went with the Serenitys. Certainly smoother, quieter, and better handling then the OEM Michelins, the tread design have a bit more aggressive look, but the side wall design might be a bit much for me.

After all the debates on what tire was better etc. from our TBN Members , I too went with the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity.

              Happy Trails

                Re: Response Edge Tires

On another thread, I saw a comment that putting tires on with an aspect ratio of 55 instead of 50 made for a more accurate speedometer reading when compared to GPS. Any thoughts on this? BTW, the Turanzas are looking like what I will want and they also come in 55's.

                  Re: Response Edge Tires

Lazy me finally tested the speedometer with my own GPS, and it matched the speedometer. My car still has OEM tires so I guess the OEM size is fine for accurate speed.

In a recent caravan at least three of us with 2002 Thunderbirds confirmed that the calibration of the speedometer did not match the GPS reading. We were all off by the same amount. Another member of the group had 55s and his speedometer was more accurate to the GPS.

Just as important as the speed was the increase in miles registered by the odometer. Those of us with OEM tires were registering more miles. This results in two things - warranty going away faster and a higher calculation of miles per gallon.

I also opted for the ResponseEdge tires when I replaced my OEM Michelins. I liked the way they looked on members cars here and the reports they were giving. I really haven't noticed that they are harsher than the OEM tires. The other thing I like about them is that Goodyear is an American company with a plant here in Oklahoma.

                      Re: Response Edge Tires

I've noticed a 1-2 miles per gallon drop since I put the Response Edge tires on. The speedometer reading was 3 mph higher than the GPS with the 6 year old Michelins, and now it is only 2 mph higher with the Goodyears. Is this due to the new tires racking up less miles on the odometer? The next time I fill up, I'm going to set the GPS distance traveled to zero and the trip odometer to zero and see how much they differ.

On another note, I've also noticed that the Response Edge tires seem rougher when they are cold, but the ride softens up after they have been warmed up.

                        Re: Response Edge Tires

Interesting. If anything, my speedometer was a hair slower with the GPS on my OEM tires.

I like the idea of buying American, but Goodyear really turned me off with how they treated Lily Ledbetter. I know that Japanese companies aren't exactly female worker-friendly either, but I expect better from American companies.

I guess I'm leaning towards the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity's.

                          Re: Response Edge Tires

I am certainly a "buy American" guy and will do so at every opportunity but I noticed at one of the Sam's Clubs I frequent that some of the Goodyears tires in stock said Made in Japan on the side including the Response Edge. I looked at 2 sizes and one said Made in USA and the other said Made in Japan. I thought all Goodyears were made here. Clearly the Bridgestones are Jap tires. The thing I regret about buying them - at least they were not made in China. At least the Michelins are made in Ardmore. OK but alas, the profits go to the frogs. This world economy thing....

                            Hey guys -

I PURCHASED THE BRIDGESTONE POTENZA TIRES.....AND I LIKE THEM.

I MISTAKENLY SAID I HAD PURCHASED THE BRIDGESTONE TURANZA SERENITY TIRES IN MY POST #21....

                            HAPPY TRAILS

I'm glad that 2K2BIRD pointed out that Goodyear is an American company - Michelin and Bridgestone are not. There's another thread about the Big Three & the threat of failing to keep American Companies in business - it's getting tough to buy thing that are made here at home - tires is one of them. Buy American. WLW

                                Re: Response Edge Tires

At the last gas fillup, I reset the odometer to zero and reset the GPS distance traveled to zero. 250 miles later (mostly all freeway), the GPS showed a half mile less traveled. Not a big deal. So, somehow I'm getting 1-2 mpg less with the new Response Edge tires.

At 30psi, I'm still getting a lot harsher ride than the Michelins. Maybe I need to check the X-braces?
