  • 48in08 ride in Houston on Sept. 15th for lunch

Sally (redbirdsal) suggested this topic be moved to another thread. She does have good ideas.

The 48in08 ride will be stopping in Houston on Sept 15th for lunch. I received an email from Lucy, one of the ride members, on the 20th and she informed me they were still on task. I replied to her email two days ago, asking where they would be stopping, but have not received a reply.

I'm going to reach out to her again as soon as I complete this post. If their plan hasn't slipped, they will arrive in H-town on a Monday. My question is, are there TBN members interested in receiving their arrival and dining information?

Like some of us, I'm expected to be at work that day however; if enough TBN members express an interest I wouldn't mind making a day of it.

It would be nice to see the classics and meet some local T-Bird owners.....

Just received reply from the group:

We are still on schedule. Only one minute late arriving at the AACM Museum at noon today in Hershey, PA, for lunch with the Red Rose Chapter :-) And that was driving in rain from Morgantown, WV, to Harrisburg -- 4-1/2 hours of rain, fog and the hills of West Virginia. It was only sprinkles the last half hour from Harrisburg to Hershey.

    Thanks!

I was informed they will be served lunch at an individuals home. The next plan would be to follow them out of Houston. They do have Road Rules and I've promised they would be followed. Those rules are available on their site or I can send them to you.

Posted by NebraskaBird on 8/17/2008 in the 2008 T-Bird Sightings thread:

8-16 -08 Lincoln State Capital. There were a total I think 21 TBirds all but two were the 1950 vintage, two were 2004 Merlots. Three of the Birds and their owners / drivers are doing 48 states in 2008, they are going to each state meeting with TBird clubs when they can and always driving to each state capital for photos with their Bird. Myself and a friend escorted the three traveling TBirds to the Syracuse Nebr. area they were going to Topeka next

Thanks Jimmy! I remember checking the schedule a couple of weeks ago, now.

What I'm wondering about the route they are traveling from Burnet, TX (Hill Country), to Oklahoma City, OK on 09/17.

Looking at the Map on the site, it appears they will be coming thru West of the D/FW area. Maybe Hwy 281 North? If so, they'll be pretty close to Dot and George.

My mistake Sally. They are going from Austin thru DFW area to Oklahoma City. Here is a link to their website again.

                    OK Houston Bird People,
I contacted Lucy back in January, offering lunch for the travelers. The Classic Thunderbirds of Houston will play the local hosts. I heard from Lucy last night. Their plans were to stay in Baton Rouge the night of the 14th, and then leave there, putting them in Houston around noon. Their hotel cancelled on them due to the last hurricane through there, so they are driving on to Lake Charles. That puts them only about 150 miles from Houston, less than 3 hours. She said they normally hit the road about 7:00am. I suggested that they delay leaving Lake Charles to avoid lingering rush hour traffic through Houston.
With all that said, we are planning an early lunch at Goode Company BBQ on I-10, on the in-bound side of the Katy Freeway, between Blalock and Bingle/Voss (8911 Katy Frwy). By early, at this point and depending on their travel plans, we intend to meet there around 11:00am on Monday, Sept 15. After lunch, we can meet at my house (Katy Frwy at the Beltway) so they can catch their breath.
I originally thought I would meet them at the Texas/Louisiana border at the Texas Welcome Center, and travel with them from there back to Houston. And then I'll probably drive with them on out I-10 after lunch, maybe as far as Columbus where they will take Hwy 71 to Austin.
We are flexible. Let me know what you think.

Thank you for the invitation, and the plans, Hugh!

I know Thunderdogs (Jerry) has been in touch with you, and I hope other Houston TBN area members will take advantage of this unique opportunity!

Please post here, folks, and send Hugh a pm.

The next stop is for the night in the Austin area.

Re: 48in08 ride in Houston on Sept. 15th for lunch

                        Lucy,
I got a call from one of your companions, but was not able to catch his name. Cell phone service was lousy before; it's atrocious now. Batteries are not the problem. Apparently we have one cell tower left, and we are all using it...

Anyway, my recommendation to you is to come I-10 through Houston. Your buddy said something about skirting Houston to the north, and I assume he meant taking 105 through Conroe. Much of that road is a pig trail, going through little podunk towns with stop signs and lights on every corner. TX DOT stopped all construction in advance of the storm, and some of I-10 was shut down today because we had a deluge early this morning. That will all be gone by now.

The BIG issue is fuel. At the very least, fill up in Beaumont, and then again when you hit the east side of Houston. I am thinking of meeting you at Hwy 146 and I-10 on the east side of Houston. It is a busy intersection, with multiple truck stops. Basically, all of Houston was without power, and almost all of I-10 is still power-less. My TBird will make about 200 miles comfortably on a fill up. The restaurant where we were going to go has no power, but I have another place in Sealy, about 30 miles west of Houston, where Highway 36 intersects I-10. It has great BBQ, and the desserts are outstanding.

If you will call me (and leave a message if I don't answer), about the time you cross into Texas, that will give me enough time to get to Hwy 146 ahead of you. Then I can lead you through this power less jungle, and get you to some good eatin' in Sealy. There was fuel there today, although the lines were a little long. Beaumont to Columbus is 160 miles, so you should be able to make that fairly easily. There are a number of smaller towns on Hwy 71 between Columbus and Austin that should have fuel.

Take care, and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

I'm so glad you're still planning to meet the Tour Hugh!

I heard on the Texas News channel after that I-10 and I-45 were closed down. Then, on the computerized Interstate traffic signs in Dallas this afternoon there were notices not to travel to Houston and Beaumont.

I sent Lucy an email after our phone conversation, and left a couple of messages on Doc's cell, but I haven't heard from them.

Have a great time, and stay safe. I can't wait to see pics of the meet.
