  • What Did I do wrong now?

I filled up at the gas station that I always go to, and after I started filing the 91 octane, I noticed that it said 10% alcohol (gasohaol) added, same as the 89 octane pump.

This is new to me. I never figured that 91 octane would ever have alcohol added.

Question, it the Tbird fuel system designed to handle alcohol? Should I use it up as fast as possible and put in regulat 91 octane? I was wondering why this gas only cost 10 cents more than 87 (no alcohol) compared the Schell station which charges 20 cents more.

89 octane is cheapest. 87 is 10 cents more and 91 is 10 cents more that 87.

My agravation started to go up when I first started with a gas island that had the 91 octane gas hose ripped off. I had to cancel the credid transaction and move to a different island. I did not notice it before. I was too busy trying to read the display with the sun glaring on it.

Some states have 10% alcohol blends across all octanes and at all stations (mandatory). I wouldn't worry about it. Modern cars are built to handle 10% ethanol, better known as E10.

My personal feeling is that all things being equal without is better.

Colorado has it in all gasoline for automobiles, and my Merlot has never had an issue with it. All new gas vehicles sold in the US have to be comptabile with 10%.

The only problems I have is with the 47 Cadillac - old cars vapor lock way easier with it, and it erodes some older formula rubber.

I myself will not worry about the 10 percent alcohol. MTBE was in the gas ever since the early 90s. Now that stuff was bad for all cars on the rubber parts and the enviroment, the alcohol is the new old replacement.

Not only E-85, also NEVER use any gas line freeze additives or gas stabilizers if you srore your car in the Winter months. They'll ruin the seals and gaskets in your fuel pump. Leroy

CORRECT!! You would be better to add some Chevron TECHRON to your first tank AFTER storage. Best Injector cleaner out there.

Don't expect the same MPG you were getting before, this blend robs you of some mileage as well.

                      Red Bird Dave,

From now on I am going to use the 91 octane w/o the alcohol for as long as I can get it.

Meanwhile I have a full tank of the 91 gasohol and I will not be driving the Tbird much. So it may sit with the tank full of gasohol all winter.

Re: What Did I do wrong now?

You will more likely be finding some places that have not put the ethanol signs on their pumps than places which do not actually have any ethanol in the mix.

This is a typical, well meaning but dumb proposal by our representatives in the Congress. It has already resulted in higher food prices and less efficient motoring.

                          Question?
It akes 10% ethanol to raise the octane from 87 to 89.

10% ethanol is also used to raise 87 octane to 91 octane. What is the other ingredient used to raise the octane since 10% ethanol only raises the octane 2 points? I dont think it is lead anymore.

I thougt E-85 is 85% Ethanol. I have no idea what the octane rating is.
