  • Buckle Up!!

Here's a link to a September 14th Columbus (OH) Dispatch article which states in part:

"The patrol said he was driving a 2003 Ford Thunderbird convertible north on Harmon Road. At Camelot Street, the car veered left, struck an embankment and overturned."

"..... was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car, the patrol said."

Unfortunately, the operator of the T-Bird did not survive. There was no mention in the article as to whether the ragtop was up or down at the time.

Unfortunately, this sounds like an all-too-typical 5:38 a.m. extension of Saturday night into Sunday morning, with tragic consequences.

Im not what you can call the younger generation, but i have been up in my Thunderbird at 5am, enjoying a ride while its still cool enough before the sun comes up to bake your brains out.
It's sad the young man lost his life, but what a way to go out in his last ride. RIP.

Unfortunately, as the Retros continue to depreciate we will see more and more Birds fall into the hands of teenagers and other sort of neer-d'wells who just consider it a used car to use, abuse, or run into the ground. There is a lovely pimp daddy 02 Evening Black edition I see from time to time around here that I want to just ram into the ditch when I see it.

As for the seatbelt if I hadn't had mine to hold me in the seat I fear a concussion wouldn't even be an issue for me because I wouldn't be around.

You know I am truely suprised more of the younger owners have not showed up here yet! I know I am relatively young ( bought my 05 when I was 29) but most of you are right they will just treat them as a normal car that "looks hot" to them until the wreck em or get bored with them.

                  Re: Buckle Up!!

Maybe it's the part in me that doesn't want to speak ill of the dead, but allow me to play devil's advocate here: perhaps, JUST PERHAPS, he was a responsible young man who was on his way to work...perhaps he dropped something and looked down to pick it up...perhaps he was exhausted from pulling an all nighter studying for college...perhaps he always buckled himself in but this morning he just didn't (for whatever reason). I know there are a lot of 'perhaps's' here, but if this were my child (our 2 boys are 29 & 35), I'd want a little mercy thrown their way.

When our oldest was 24, he was working 2 full-time jobs to get himself out of debt. He'd leave one job (all -nighter) and drive to the day job. One day a DPS officer pulled him over cuz he thought our son was drunk...turned out he was simply exhausted. DPS didn't ticket him, but he did make him walk the rest of the way to work...and told him he couldn't continue this without killing himself, NO MATTER HOW YOUNG HE WAS.

I feel bad for the family...I really do.

                      Re: Buckle Up!!

As with AZTB my son was driving home from one of his two summer jobs (he was in college at the time and it was three am). A N.H. state trooper stopped him as he was weaving in his lane. When my son explained the situation the trooper followed him home and congratulated him for having the desire to work his way through college. Today he is a biologist for Monsanto. I hesitate to draw conclusions about this newspaper article. It's a shame the car was wrecked, but, who knows the situation. I try to remember, just because I was smart enough to buy a Thunderbird, it doesn't in any way make me an expert on what others should do with theirs.

I just can not believe what I have just read in the first 8 posts of this thread.
Post 9 finally brings TBN back to the kind compassionate people we often like to think we are. Some of you are way to cynical, way to quick to judge.

Update on this tragedy, apparently alcohol related. See the attached link to the Lancaster Eagle Gazette:

"The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crash, according to the news release."

Thanks Mike; I am sure the family is distressed about this; I would hate to be woke up in the morning by a patrolman telling me one of my children was killed in an auto accident, of which by the way happens far more often then we like to think. Alcohol related or not. The numbers are out there and they are far bigger then the number of war casualties. _/\_

Just be cause some of us did not say that we feel for the family of this young lad, does NOT mean it isn't implied!!
