Have had my 2003 for six great months. Bought it with 16, 000 miles and was solid and tight. About four months ago I started hearing a 'clunk' sound coming from the center, rear of the car when I was de-accelerating. Such as when I saw a red light, I'd back off the gas and start to break--At the time I would stop, there is this after-sound of a clunk sound. It doesn't happen when the car is moving, hitting bumps etc, just when I'm stopping. The car is, as I speak, in the ford dealership, and three techs and the service manager all drove it, but can't find anything wrong. The motor mounts are tight and the universal has no play. Anyone have any ideas?? I don't know much about cars, but I've suggested the drive shaft and when I think of it, it seems to happen only when the car is really warmed up, making me think that there's something in the muffler system, but as I said, I don't know much about mechinics of cars. Any input is great!! Thanx..

Re: anyone know this 'noise'??
How about this post? Do you know your Bird's build date?

If not, Use the search function and enter
"thump" or "clunk" rear
Find the one that best describes your problem. Print it off, and take it to your shop.

Re: anyone know this 'noise'??
TSB is a TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN issued by Ford. The service advisors at the dealership have them. You can use the "search" function here for: tsb 03-15-8 if you want to see it.Last edited by V8 Cat; Sep 24, 2008, 09:25 PM.sigpic

Re: anyone know this 'noise'??
thanx. When it was in the shop, the noise wasn't there, but I took it yesterday when I had been driving for about a half hour and it started again. Took a mechanic for a short ride, and he now says that it sounds like the transmission, because it's happening only when there's a soft stop, so hopefully you guys have nailed it on the head! my fingers are crossed and do appreciate the help! Will let you know.
