On a cold start, particularly if the car has not been started for awhile, I'm getting a squeaking or chirping sound that almost seems to start a the engine and come right down the exhaust sysmtem, or echos underneath the car. After five minutes of driving the sound goes away. Could it be a belt, alternator, loose exhaust mounts? Or, could it be something more serious within the engine itself? From the sound it almost seems like it has to be something on the outside of the engine or exhaust. Any input would be appreciated. I have the extended warranty, but I would probably have to leave the car for them to diagnose. Thanks, Ed

Re: squeaking on startup
Who knows but I'm gonna guess Fan belt.
These things snake their way around all those pumps and pulleys now.......in what seems like 20 different turns (thank God for the little diagram that shows the way)..... "glazed belts" slip and often produce the noises you describe. It often goes away as the belt warms up.
Sadly some belts will last years before going bad others seem to do it within a few months.
I have a truck that ate up a belt in 2 months after the first lasted 3 years. When I replaced that one the next one is the one on the truck now and it's been there for 2 years.
It's a bit of a crap shoot I guess. Luckily they aren't terribly expensive and pretty easy to change.

Re: squeaking on startup
The fan belt is the most likely. It could be streched or the tensioner may be getting weak. When a new belt is installed, the arrows on the tensioner show be lined up. If they don't, then the tensioner will also have to be replaced. I don't know how you we see any of that to check it out. There is so much other equipment covering it up. Most extended warranties should cover the tensioner and the labor, but you should expect to pay for the belt.

Re: squeaking on startup
Took the cover off this evening. It has been quite wet with all the rain. When I started the engine/cold start there was no squeaking. I figure it has to be the belt. With the moisture still in the engine compartment there was no sound whatsover. If it was mechanical I think it would make the noise even if it had been wet out. Ed
