  • "Wheel Shield" Does it Work?

Ever hear of a product called Wheel Shield? According to the manufacturer a simple misting of Wheel Shield will leave a long lasting (up to a year) non-stick coating that repels brake dust and winter road chemicals all the while retaining the wheels shine. And what does stick to the wheels simply washes off with a wet sponge or cloth, no scrubbing or special cleaners. It sells for about $10.00 a bottle. No idea how much is in a bottle.

    Does It Work ?

Mike, I strongly suggest you do what I did... install ceramic brake pads (I also added cross drilled rotors, and detailed my calipers with lipstick red high heat paint). The dust IS GONE. I have wire wheels, and brake dust was my arch enemy.

Without ever having heard of it, much less having tried it, I will state unequivocally NO!

      It does not work.

If it did that, imagine what it would do to your brake discs and pads.

My brake dust comes off with a wet cloth anyway,( just a pain going into all the openings) or the brush on the end of the hose for a quick job to get the worst off.

Mark, the dust is still there just not as much. I have the wire wheels, ceramic pads, and drilled rotors, the only difference is white wall tires, I get the gray color on my whitewalls in about 100 miles.

I've heard of a black disc that fits between the back of the wheel and the hub and is the same diameter of the wheel rim. These are supposed to keep brake pad dust from collecting on the wheels? Anyone ever had any luck with these? Leroy

I have these, Leroy...work awesome, especially since I have WW's. Brake dust never makes it way onto the wheel or the tire, and they are vented to keep the brakes cool.

I, too, have the brake shields and have found that, although they will not entirely eliminate brake dust from accumulating on the wheel and tire, it does reduce build-up significantly - a rather inexpensive solution too.

I would be interested in the black plastic wheel backings to keep the dust off. Anyone know how I can get a set of these and the cost?

I recently got whitewalls for my 2002 Yellow Bird and I bought these Kleen Wheel guards and they do work. They do not cover the brake so they do not cause heat build up. They fit inside the wheel and block the dust. They also look pretty nice.

The above shields are now $28.89 a pair even better price. Now is it one pair or two as my back wheels don't have as much dust.I did have them on my '93 Pontiac GTP it had white rims and they did a good job keeping them clean.Don't remember if they were vented but the GTP went through front brakes every 8K-10K.GM had a sue case about the brakes against them and I was notified in 2000 two yrs after trading it in.

I got two pair because you can see the shield though the wheels and I did not want to bother with changing them when I rotate the tires.
