  • Strange...

While filling the MSG yesterday, I put the nozzle in and started pumping, it almost immediately over flowed back. Continued attempts to add more fuel resulted in the same.

My wife opened the door and said "you want me to shut it off"
I said, yes, she did, and it took gas just fine....

I don't recall if I ever fueled it up with the engine running since ownership, but in 5 years, im sure i have.

Anyone got any insight? similar experiences?

    Thanks,
    Pete

In NL it is not allowed to fill up with engines running. You are not even allowed to use cell phones doing that. Why would you fill it while engine is running?

I have done a lot of dumb things in my day but even I have never considered trying to fill up with the motor running. Just doesn't make any sense. I would not be surprised that it didn't work. Glad nothing happened.

I would think that in all the states it would be illegal and a definite fire hazard.

Our Thunderbirds are fuel injected, what fuel that is not used while the motor is running, that is the extra is being pumped back into the tank causing back pressure. Also it is against the law in the U.S.A. to leave your motor running while fueling. Its in the national fire code. Consider yourself lucky it did not catch fire. Yep cell phones and any static electricity can ignite. Always touch the pump and the car on the metal at the same time to get rid of any static charge. Its a big issue in the winter time due to low humidity.

I have seen at least 5 stations burn, dont know if it was a cell phone that caused it. Technicians as myself in the field were told by PEI not to even have our cell phones on us when working on fuel systems. I know of 1 tech working in a sump replacing a bad capacitor, a fire started after his cell phone rang. So much for Myth Busters. I do know static electricity will cause a fire.

Filling a car with the engine running is against the law. It's clearly posted at all stations. But what really gets me is your putting everyone else at risk, for what? Your A/C can keep running, pretty selfish. And to be sure in the past you have fueled up with the engine running sounds to me like you've done this numerous times, in your Thunderbird or another car. Everyone is giving you lots of grief over this, hope you stop and think.

I didn't post this requesting information on the law, statutes, federal or local. I posted this as a general question on this behavior. I do find it odd.

If you want to have me ticketed for my obviously illegal behavior please contact local law enforcement, and have them come and issue a citation.

                      Thanks anyway.

LOL! If you think this is bad, try posting that you actually drive your Bird in the rain, you don't put nitrogen in your tires, you have fingerprints under the door latch, and you don't use pure synthetic oil......or the worst of worst, you haven't kept it stock.

LOL...youre right...I'd better keep quiet about doing a 360 degree circle because i caught a patch of ice (which implies ive driven in th esnow), or that in the past two monthes, I have seen my speedo register 135 mph twice.

Ive accidently driven over a parking block, drive in thunderstorms, down dirt and gravel roads, and on occasion smoke in it. Wait, and I'm on a good path to exceed 15K miles driven this year.

Never mind that Ive heard people call the TBird a Lincoln LS on steroids.

To each their own i guess...but just couldn't believe the common lashing I got for putting gasoline in the car running. I bet most of em, put bubble wrap on their kids to let them go out to play.

                          Just Kidding.

And heaven forbid you ever mention you let your gas tank run below half full or even worse that you routinely run your car through a car wash , they are likely to hang you from the nearest tree!

All kidding aside, you are lucky you did not catch fire. I worked on fuel pumps 25+ years. I have been on fire twice.
My Thunderbird has been through a lot, Yep it even got rained on and i almost ran out of gas. I have even spilled a drink on the drivers seat while smoking.
Enjoy your bird, they look great even if there dirty.
