    Re: Strange...

I could care less if you ever wash your car, speed through a hail storm in pouring rain on a gravel road. But as you stated you posted "A question on this general behavior" your likely to get these responses, and yes, I will in person request someone to turn off their engine if refueling alongside me, never had anyone do less than apologise and turn their engine off. It is a law, it's designed to protect you, others and the business, not to mention the owners livelyhood. I got nothing else to say on this matter.

Here are a few more laws designed to protect us.

There is a law in California that requires an individual to acquire a hunting permit before setting mouse traps. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is proposing a law that would make the purchase and selling of contraband firearms illegal. I am pretty sure that it is already illegal to buy and sell illegal firearms.

The best of all, though, is a law passed in February in Chico, California. The city council passed a nuclear weapons ban. It is illegal to possess a nuclear device in Chico, California, and there is a $500 fine for individuals who detonate a nuclear weapon within city limits!

The next time you see a terrorist with a nuclear bomb strapped around his body, please ask him not to detonate it. After all, it is against the law.

I'm not saying the turn off your engine while refueling is a bad law at all, but I don't think it was necessary to attack NorthernBird as he was. Kind of reminds me of that old throwing the first stone story.....

        Re: Strange...

There once was a man named Pete
Who thought it was pretty neat
To fuel up his ‘Bird with engine on
Just flip on the pump and the stream was strong
He’d done it many times and nothing went wrong.

One day while he was filling up this way
A wire in a COP had come astray
A spark on the wind took flight
        It wasn’t a pretty sight
        As the vapors became a-light.

In the midst of the resulting flash
        Peter made a mad dash
        And escaped the final Ker-thump
With his head bowed into a slump
As his ‘Bird turned into a lump.

The moral is easy to tell
To avoid the fires of hell
Resist the urge if you will
Don’t leave it on while you fill
It could be me that you kill.

That's right Julie and don't you forget it! Especially with a Evening Black Retro Bird! I keep a noose on hand for such infractions though I shouldn't confess that as in doing so I have committed a Class A Felony in the State of NC effective October 1.

I could care less if you leave your engine running when you pump gas as long as you don't do it while I am pumping at the same station: I don't want my Retro or myself to externally com bust with you.

Don't ya just love the internet? People's mouths just loose all filters when they are hiding behind the keyboard.

To answer your question, the reason is probably because your car is fuel injected. The fuel pump "pressurized" the tank. That is why modern car engine lights come on if your gas cap isn't on tight. I had this happen on my Ford Pickup once when I first got it. I didn't put the cap on tight enough, and the "Check Engine" light came on. Took it to the shop, they checked it, and it fixed the problem. I hear this all the time.

I agree that it is best shut off the engine for various reasons while gassing up.

Changing gears and trying to give you an answer to your original question...I know everytime I get my wife involved in anything mechanical or automotive odd things happen!

When I was in the Military I was often involved in "hot refueling" of Helicopters and sling load operations and I can tell you that static electricity is a real and present danger....I also had a friends brother die in a horrible explosion of a 5000 gallon tanker that killed him which was blamed on static electricity. Even with that being said I have refueled my Tbird on several occasions with the engine running on below zero days in the winter after discharging any static buildup from me, the car and the pump. I do not recall ever having any backup of fuel. I am NOT recomending that anyone else attempts this.

I do not believe that cellphones have been the cause of the explosions and I wonder why if there have been so many incidents why they haven't developed a simple self grounding area at the pump.

                          Re: Strange...

                          Hi there,

Just read through this all thread and it's one of the funniest yet in my opinion. (Please bear in mind I am British and have that odd sense of humour).

Gassing the car with the engine running - that's a crazy one for starters. At least it sounds like you had put out your cigarette first. I've actually seen folks smoking away while they hold the gas nozzle in their other hand and I kind of got out of there pretty quick.

What made it even funnier is the varying reactions from all us TBN'ers.

Had a great drive this Saturday. Top down with the sun slowly setting directly in front over the mountains. The sun was a bright red ball for the few minutes before it slid away leaving the sky painted pink, orange and turquoise. ( And I had earlier watched the Talladehga race on our new lcd tv. What a treat that was).

I guess the main thing is out of this: Don't smoke when filling up and remember to switch off the engine.

                          All the best, Gordon.

A couple of months ago I was in a station when an Ohio State Patrol Car pulled in & the trooper started to fill up. I finished filling pulled my receipt & then noticed that the patrol car was running - I walked over & kinda stared at him & he asked me if I wanted something & I said "Yes, isn't it illegial to fuel a running vehicle? He thought then said, "Yes but I didn't turn off the car." I said "Yes, I noticed." He topped it off & left in a hurry - no I didn't get the car #, wish I had. Like Ron White says, "You can't fix stupid" - if there's another opportunity I'll get the # & make sure he sees me do it! WLW

My wife opened the door and said "you want me to shut it off"
I said, yes, she did, and it took gas just fine....

I don't recall if I ever fueled it up with the engine running since ownership, but in 5 years, im sure i have.

Anyone got any insight? similar experiences?

If you rub it in with gasoline first then torch it and stick it up the hose I bet it will. They never do realistic tests in that show
