  • Ned's Wreck

Bird was parked at my daughter soccer practice last Tuesday. I jumped out of the bird to pick her up, sat at the practice for ten minutes and when I got back some aye-hoal had thrown a huge piece of concrete through the driver side window (to get at my Garmin GPS- stupid me).

The idiot missed the first time and smashed the drivers door first- it apparently flew into the air and took a chunk out of the chrome windshield trim. When he/she(it) managed to get it through the window, it bounced around the interior and trashed both door panels and the center console arm rest.

I got to drive it home with the interior smelling like coffee (the chunk hit my plastic Starbucks travel mug which immediately exploded) and broken glass shards (yes, I could smell the glass shards).

It's at Cook's collision and will cost ~$5k to get it repaired. Fortunately it's insured and my part will only be $1k.

I keep reminding myself "it's just a "thing"", but I am still really pissed and desparately want to spend about 5 minutes with the aye-hoal.

Should have it back in a couple of weeks....

Moral of the story. no matter how quickly you'll be back to the car, stow any visible expensive items in the trunk.

That is a really sad story. Sometimes I think it is better to have a car like our Birds totaled than to go thru the disappointment, anger and all sorts of other emotions due to someone else's desire for a electronic device.

Here's hoping your Bird comes back as good as new.

Sorry about the BUM luck Ed.When ever I have the GPS in the car it comes taken off to include the windshield mount. In the last couple of weeks on the advise of the P.D. the condo Association has posted notices to remove any visible items from the vehicle and make sure doors are locked as there have been car break-in's in the next development.
We are in tough times and there are people looking to make money any way they can.The bad part look at the cost, damage and anger someone causes and they will sell it for a couple of bucks.

Sorry to hear about your break in!
I never leave anything of value in the bird that is visible to someone outside. We have the same problems here! Drug users will break in and cause thousands of dollars damage just to get at a radio or gps unit that they will sell for $50 bucks. I'd just like to catch the lousy thief and kick his a**! I would be so pissed off! Hope you get the bird fixed to your satisfaction and hopefully they catch the vandal!

I feel your pain, Ned, having had to have Goldi repaired twice in the last 3 years from "DBJ" (damage by jerks). I know well the feeling of your heart sinking to your stomach when you first walk up and see it. You have comrades here.

                  Re: Ned's Wreck

When I was a kid and teen I did many, many, things I am not proud of today and some got me in some fairly good trouble but, I never, and would never, do anything bad to a person’s car (or any car for that matter) nor someone’s home (like egging, pouring gas on a lawn, etc.). Trashing a car for a GPS that they probably got $25. bucks for. Makes you want to scream.

                    Re: Ned's Wreck

It had to be some meth freak looking for anything to sell. It is an unforgiveable offense, for sure, but at least maybe there is some kind of low end explanation. I had mine keyed last summer, $650 damage to driver side door. The only saving grace was that the idiot didn't have enough sense to key the front fender to the back fender....the damage would have been twice as much, he would have had twice the fun and I would have been twice as mad. Sorry for your trouble.

This kind of thing used to happen to me all the time when I lived in Africa. The worst part for me was the feeling of being violated. It's hard to describe if you haven't gone through it.

Thanks for the sympathetic notes everyone. Looks like its gonna be another couple of weeks. Had to special order the inside passengers doo trim from detroit.

Forgot to mention- when my 6year old daughter saw the damage, she cried. She patted the car on the headlight and said "It's OK Ladybug, were gonna get you fixed"

Driving the rental Grand Prix sure will make me appreciate the bird when I get it back.

Ed - sorry to hear of the damage to your car. And what a little sweetie your little daughter is, how caring of her to make the comment and gesture she did. This girl will grow up to value other peoples things. And you just may have a car "nut" on your hands. Better keep Ladybug in good shape for the next 10 plus years, she may have drivers test that a 16 yr old wants to take in her future.
