  • gas milage

On another note. While on my trip to Houston I noticed something interesting with the gas gauge. I checked the milage I was getting at every fill up, and to my surprise, I get more miles from the first half of my tank than with the second half. I can go 250 miles and the gauge wil register 1/2 full or 1/2 empty however you want to look at it. Then when I run the tank down I only get 150 miles from half to empty. Where the heck is my other 100 miles going? My best guess is that half empty is really 2/3 empty. Imagine that a FLAW............... p.s. I AM GETTING 30MPG. I have checked this at least 20 times and the numbers are the same, soooooooooo my car at least, is more fuel efficient than most anything on the road.

Every Ford I've had for the last 30 years has had a gas gauge like that.

Last year we drove from northern NJ to Maggie Valley, NC for Thunder and Good Vibrations and got 32 mpg on our birdy. Great ride, great mileage, great fun.

While I have never gotten 30 or 32 mpg on my thunderbird I guess I have owned more than 50 cars in my life and all of them have the same type of gauge. I had an Oldsmobile that took forever to get to 1/4 tank and then it went down like a tachometer. Some of them read just like yours and some of them are backwards, going down really fast until it stops dropping and then goes really slow. Doesn't matter much. I had an STS that worked great but the reserve light would only come on about two blocks before it ran out of gas! That wasn't any fun.

I only care that I can figure it out and that empty means empty.

I don't know if this happens with others ,but when gas is expensive the gauge seems to drop fast. When it's cheap ( boy am I living in the past) the gauge go's down slooooooooow

We got 30 mpg on the way home from NH last year but that is the only time. We usually get a little over 26.

My gas gauge, same thing, get about 180-200 miles to half tank, than less than 100 on second half tank, gauge really move fast near the bottom.

                  Hey D. Mullis - My 05 is right in line with yours, 26 / 27 MPG driving 70 / 75 MPH , But put the foot in it a little (85 / 90) and that drops to 22 / 23.

                    Re: gas milage

                    I get 26/27 highway driving....60 -70 mph.

                    I get 17.5 - 17.9 driving around town.

Saw 29 MPG on trips between ME and PA, but never PA to ME...but on the drive from MO to ME, back to MO, to UT down to AZ back to MO the best we saw was 27.2 MPG..

That run down I-95 from ME to PA must be downhill!

Don't know what kind of gas some of you are using, but I average only around 18 to 19 MPG driving around town in my stock 03. Can't imagine getting much more than maybe 5 MPG more on the highway and I drive very conservatively.
