Borla's, my first mod,
I thought were a waste of money when I put them on.
I didn't notice much of an increase
in performance or sound for their cost.
Then I added the CAI, this made the Borla's sing a lot better,
but it takes about 500 miles for the MAF to adjust
to hear and feel the full effect.
Also performance seemed slightly better.
Finally I added the XCAL II best by far mod of the three.
On the way home from having it done I was on the freeway @ 60 MPH and stomped on it, by the time I looked down It was at 100.
But the best result was the SST.
Before the lag was so long I never used it.
It was like you would hit it up a gear and the tranny would say
"Oh,,,, do you want me to shift?,,,, Ok.
Now when you bump it up a gear its there like a manual shift.
Performance off the line is still a little weak,
you have to power break to get the tires loose off the line.
But stomping on it at a freeway on ramp
makes me feel 40 years younger.
I could never have a Bird without all three again.
Thanks! I appriciate the detailed info. I've tried the SST once, and man... i was underwhelmed - so I'm really hoping that the XCAL II will fix this. I'm going to put on a CAI, but doubt I'll do the Borla, but you never know!
some are trying to make this car whats its not....a hot rod? my family sedan[caddy sts]is alot faster car....just put the top down, turn up the music, hit the hwy....the smile you get and the enjoyment of just cruzin in this car..is what it was made for.
The 02 has a different transmission than the 03-05's. The later models are drive by wire...
Same transmission, just a difference in how it's accessed by the shifter.
George uses the SST sometimes and sometimes the standard auto position on the 05 - depending on the type of driving he's doing.

what's the big deal with "select shift"? why is this different then selecting gears in a 2002?
as for difference in shifting between the 02 and the SST . with the SST, you dont' have to think about putting it in the next gear, just a tap will move it up or down a gear without worrying about which position the gear lever is in. Lets you concentrate more on the road ahead of you than on the shift position you're in.
Please someone out there tell me how to use the select shift on my 2005 Bird! Bosco
Hard to imagine why ford included it.
Almost worth-less, IMO.
From a standing start if you are looking for performance you probably can't beat the transmission's pre-determined shifts anyway. Let's face the T-Bird is a Cruiser anyway. Performance car it is not.
I'd sooner have seen Ford just give us 5 separate positions for the 5 forward gears rather than just Drive and Over-Drive (better known as 4th and 5th).......there are times when it would be nice to pull the transmission into 3rd or 2nd for coasting down steep hills without abusing the brakes. The select shift could be used for this I suppose but I'd still rather see the shift position rather than "hunt" for it by tapping the shifter up or down.
I used the "select shift" a couple of times just to see how it worked and have basically ignored the feature since.
I got it because I thought I might want to sell the car some day and the person who wanted to buy it might demand it. I think it is useless. I had it on my Lincoln LS also and on both cars I think I could count on the fingers of my hands how many times I used the sport shift. Useless, in my opinion. The car runs faster with the computer shifting it. Nice gimmick, that is all.
