Some pictures of 3M Scotchgard paint protection film
Re: Some pictures of 3M Scotchgard paint protection film
Does anyone know where you can buy this stuff before it is cut? I've found that they sell 2 smaller sizes - 4" x 10 yards and 4" x 40 yards and then massive sizes - various widths x 120 feet. I'm looking for something in the 24 - 36 inch width by 10 - 15 feet.

I really like the 3M clear bra stuff. It comes with 5 years parts and labor warranty. There is a guy on ebay who seems to be less expensive than most other vendors. His ebay name is: chipgardman. His name is: Steve Gullickson. Cell phone is: (715-581-4273. (Somewhere in Wisc.)
I just bought some from him. Seems like nice guy; communicates well via email or phone. I am getting ready to order more for a second car.
Give him a shot. He is some kind of 3M dealer, and he is negotiable on his pricing.

Everytime I go to N.Y. I stay at my sister's home in E.Williston.I must have walked past this shop a dozen times.Have to stop in the next time.Car looks great Sal.I remember seeing your Bird going down Prospect Av.one time even with the sunglasses on it was a shining glare
Looks good Sal but i have run into a problem with the new 3M clear bra I had installed in April. BUGS....The new 3M stuff has pores and the bug juice gets into it and looks like orange spots all over the front of my car. It's happened several times this summer. I am taking the car back in a week or so to see what they can do about that. I even put 3 coats of the special wax on the bra before I drove it the first time. Most of our guys have had theirs on for several years, but it's the older 3M clear bra. So I am thinking it must be the new breathable stuff. I would check with the people who installed yours to see which type they installed....
Lee,
I'm not sure if this is the case or not, but from talking to the installer, Detailing Dynamics, they claim the installation is always the key to how long it will last. It seems that's fairly obvious to me anyway, and a bit self serving on their part!
I think you're doing the right thing by returning it for reapplication. I would too.
Re: Some pictures of 3M Scotchgard paint protection film
I know when it's installed correctly it looks great and really saves the car. Mine is actually starting to come off around the fog lights, so now I am wondering if the entire thing needs to be done over. Still need to find out about the stains to......I hope I'll have the time to take it back the end of this week.....

Lee,
Good luck with that... If nothing else, the peace of mind knowing that potential damage is minimized with this stuff, is well worth the costs... In my case anyway, the costs were a bit pricey.
I would think they should be able to polish out the stains before they reapply the material.

I think my wife Karin was probably driving it to her job at Lufthansa!
Re: Some pictures of 3M Scotchgard paint protection film
Lee, I have been using a clear bra on all my rides (including daily drivers) and defects can be reworked in pieces. You don't have to replace everything. For each front there are around six pieces so each can be removed and replaced. I have had that done repeatedly.

I am thinking of using the 3M / Xpel for under the hardtop instead of the Ford strips. Do any of you know how hard it is to remove it when you want to take it off, or how it is removed?

John,
I have the X-Pel under both of our hardtops (I know Chuck did it on his DSB as well). In my opinion, it's the only way to go as far as a clear material application. I took a set of the Ford strips to my guy, using them as templates, he cut new ones out of X-Pel. Rather then just have the thin strip across the sail panel, he covered the entire surface, cutting out for the 3rd brake light.
As far as removal goes, no worries on paint damage. The material can be heated up using a hair dryer and peeled off. Any residual adhesive comes off easily.
Good Luck!
