  • Hardtop SCAM ALERT!

Saturday morning I drove from Austin to Cleveland TX to see a Lt. Blue hardtop at ANDERSON FORD (dealership on Hwy 59S) - the top is advertised on Craigslist and Ebay - asking price $1,000 - it was supposed to be unused, only damage some scratches from storage - repaint offered for an additional $350 - the parts manager told two different stories about how he got the top, neither of which were plausible. My observations: heavy abusive use - too many scratches, dings, scapes to list - exposed rubber hard and UV damaged - mildew on headliner - mouldy smell. The response from the parts manager when confronted with the above was to ask his boss if they could accept less. They offered to reduce the price to $900. I declined.
I believe this top is a refugee from a salvage yard and the dealer is trying to pass it off as unused inventory. Members beware!

          Tom,
You'll have that! That's why, even on Ebay you need to see what you're buying before you pay for it. Keep looking on Ebay though that's where you find the most tops. If you bid on any, make sure they accept PayPal and the Item is covered under PayPal Protection. That way the seller has to guarantee the your sadisfaction. Check the sellers Feedback history too. I looked for a year and found a top on Craigslist as part of the contents of a storage locker that the owner had not paid the fee on and couldn't be found. I had to haggle with them but got it for $400.00 and it had some scratches, a part cracked and a part missing. No stand, cover or T-Tool. Wasn't the same color as my car either and I made a big deal out of that just to get the price down. I cost me a little over $200.00 for the parts I needed, a little elbow gease rubbing the scratches out and getting it cleaned up. But now it's finished and it's perfect and I have a little over $600.00 in it, and I love the Mountain Shaddow Grey top on my Black T-Bird, and so does everyone that sees it. Don't give up, you'll find a top. Good Luck! Leroy

If the bid is legit (doubtful) on site inspection will screw that deal.

I have no idea if the bid is legit or not, don't really care. I was just pointing out that the top you looked at sold for $1,650.

Never mind the car, it'll be the hardtop I hang on to. Appreciating faster than the car.

This reminds me of an ebay seller who tried to get me to buy his white hard top for $5000.00. I was surprised that he could put the crack pipe down long enough to type the offer.......

Its always buyer beware when dealing on ebay. I should note that I did find a white hardtop on ebay for $1500.00 and I was pleased with the purchase experience and the seller was a pleasure to deal with.
