I took my 02 Bird in today for the "update", service writer looked on the computer and said that it does not have an update available? He said for $85 he could hook it up and only that point could he determine if an update would even run. Am I saying the wrong thing to get the proper update, or does my dealer not know what he is talking about? He said there is not way to run an 05 program on an 02, said it would either update with something or would not once it runs my setting.?? Any help would be appreciated!

Re: computer chip vs. computer upgrade

Prior to my 36/36 warranty expiring being I took my car to a LM dealership asked that it be “hooked up” and checked to see if the latest code was loaded. The mechanic hooked up the ECM via OBDII port and queried the ECM to get the release code. The mechanic queried the “Ford” data base for the latest release and it came back that the code installed was the latest.

John, your service writer is wrong, there are updates available for the 02's. (That is provided your car has not already had the updates installed. The difference in the cars performance is amazing, it would be $85 well spent as many members here can attest to. Is there another dealership you could take your car to?)

No, it has not had an update, so I guess if he "hooks" it up an update will be installed automatically? I am located in the sticks of East Texas so I will have to take a trip to Dallas for one of the larger dealers. Should the service writer know of an update by looking on his computer or would he not know until it is hooked? Thanks for your help!

The actual release code in the ECM will not be known until it is connected to the equipment at the dealership. Updates will not be done automatically simply because the ECM is hooked up. It is kind of like Windows updates... you got to go see what is available and then initiate the down loads if the ECM does not have the most recent release.
