I spent an enjoyable day and a half in Washington DC. I went to watch my daughter, Shelby, a student and swimmer at American University, compete in a meet against Georgetown. My early Friday arrival allowed me time to see Union Station, the Postal Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of American History. I especially enjoyed the military and transportation exhibits at the Smithsonian, and was disappointed not to see some sort of mechanized mail sorting equipment on display at the Postal Museum.
At the Smithsonian gift shop, there are tons of items, many dovetail with History Channel productions.
I found a book to add to my automotive literature collection.
Legendary American Cars, by Matt Delorenzo, published by Edizzoni White Star. The book is lavish with high quality photographs. The easy to read text only generally describes the pictured cars, but is craftily divided into historic periods referencing the automotive industry , and the related sociology. Covering more than antiques and 50's classics, the book covers the industry up to 2006 and discusses in some detail the challenges and changes in the American auto industry from the 1970's oil crisis, the joint venture projects, the expanding import market and the development of transplant companies. The book can be opened to any page and enjoyed a section at a time without requiring a cover to cover reading.
Thunderbird is covered over several pages with 1956 and 57 Thunderbirds featured. Not much of the intervening models is mentioned until the 2002 Retro generation Thunderbird is given nearly a full page. To my additional pleasure the 2006 Dodge Challenger Concept Car is covered over a two page spread.
