Has anyone that has recieved one of these racks tried to see if it will fit into the trunk? It looks like it would lay in there and you would be able to close the lid. Leroy
I've always liked the luggage racks on sports cars. In the beginning I planned on ordering one of these. Then I didn't and was glad I didn't. But after seeing some of the photos, the photo of Goldilocks and 5bird7 both sporting their new attire sold me. I ordered a rack on Friday, scheduled for Monday delivery. Although I don't plan on mounting the rack unless I'm traveling, I'll probably have to mount it for every trip. Even though I'm a single man, for some reason, I can never get all my stuff in my car. As George Carlin would say, we all got stuff, then we get more stuff, then we have to find a place for our stuff, then when we realize we still have some room, we got to get more stuff! Now I'm looking for a perfect travel container to fit perfectly on the rack, hold lots of stuff and be nicely color coordinated to my Cashmere car.
Has anyone found anything practical and good looking to secure luggage to the rack. I don't think bungee cords word look right considering the quality of the rack and our Birds
I've been thinking the same thing. I would like some straps that look retro, something that compliments the rack. My rack came on Tuesday but have not had time to install. Now it's snowing again and will have to deal with 5 to 8 inches by days end. I'll have a lot of time to look for tie downs.

I'm working on that one right now with custom luggage. I'm thinking about two styles for that straps:
1) A Leather buckle type retro look (although not very weather resistant)
2) A nice and clean black webbing with a nice and elegant buckle/clamp. (for better weather resistance)
And, for the luggage it would compliment the straps.
1) Luggage that looks kind of retro... maybe a leather.
2) Luggage that would be similar to samsonite for weather resistance.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Also, Charles Aaron (a tbn member here) made a good suggestion about a fiberglass spare tire holder that you can paint to match your Tbird and incorporate the Thunderbird wings emblem into it. This could be a useful accessory too?
There are so many new options opening up with this Trunk Rack.
I suggest that the first thing that should be considered is to figure out some way of locking the rack to the car so it can't be removed. Then anything made to be transported on it such as luggage or the spare tire carrier also be designed to lock to the rack. That way you could leave your car unattended if you had to while travaling. When I first saw this rack I thought it was secured from the inside of the trunk making it imposible to remove unless the trunk was unlocked. I've seen other racks that have covers that lock over the bolts that secure it to the trunk. The best rule is, if they can't see it, they wont try to steal it. That's why I thought this rack would've been alot more appealing if it would've been designed to fit in the trunk when you were through with it since it's so easy to put on and take off. Leroy
My first thought was also to have it store in the trunk. Realistically though the trunk isn't that big and once all the accessories are in it, the trunk would be full!
Nothing is theft proof, especially the car its self...Just have to have trust.
If anyone is worried about theft, although the thief would not be able to ever get the custom clamps that hold the Trunk Rack on off your Tbird without popping the trunk open... and, this rack is specifically designed for the Tbird only. Therefore, I don't think that the type of person driving a Tbird would steel one off your Tbird to have it on theirs.
But just in case you are still worried:
You could use a "tamper resistant pin-in-star bolt with your Trunk Rack. Here are the specs you will need if you ever need to order them from your hardware store;

you know the boot cover cost more than the trunk rack and can be removed with six shaps, i have not had mine taken and it's on alot. As Aaron stated the rack will only fit the t-bird. people steal things they can easily resale.
If I had one of the racks I would use a set of ratchet straps for the luggage.Don't forget a small plastic if it rains. From what I see and have read about the installation i don't think it would be a major problem to remove and take into a motel room.If anyone asked what it is just tell them "it's a rack would you like to try it" Let them figure it out.
