Luggage Rack - I Don't Think SO!

I cannot believe all the Hoop La from you Bird owners over the Luggage Rack. How can you "junk-up" a beautiful car like the Thunderbird with a luggage rack on the trunk? IMO, the only add-on to our great looking Birds is a Pinstripe down the side (and I've had mine done).

3Birds, I'm inclined to agree with you, I don't think they do anything good for the appearance, but I am also inclined to believe they would serve a purpose. I'm watching closely as pictures of the rack and it's installation are posted by those that bought the first ones. As it stands right now there are a few unanwered questions that I would need answered before I would buy one. Leroy

As for me I bought my rack for practical purposes on long trips I plan to take. Not as a permanent add on. When not in use it will hang on the garage wall. With all due respect, as we all have our own views of what we like and think looks good, I don't think pinstripes add anything to a car either. I've bought a few things from Aaron that I thought I might add on (V8 emblems, dash kit) and they are still sitting on my garage shelf and will not be used (anyone interested?).

I honestly can't say I'd want one myself, but I can certainly see the appeal of having the racks. With so limited space in the car, it's got to be a handy thing if you can't/don't travel light. As far as the looks go, I guess it's just a personal thing. One of the things I like about the retro birds the most is that you can personalize it to your own tastes. I think the luggage rack falls into that category - it just depends on what you like and what you think looks good on your car. I like that we now have the option of putting one on, but I don't think I will.

Gary, I bought mine for the same reason. It is easy to install in less than ten minutes. I do take exception to Phil's comments like "junked up". I certainly would not make that kind of remark about anyone's modifications to their car. To each his own!!

I didn't buy a rack as I don't have much use for it.On a long trip I take my Caddy as we usually stay at a friends home and I do the driving.But to say it looks "junked up" I think it gives the Bird a more European look ,like a touring car.As stated there is a limited trunk space and if you want to travel with the top down you lose the space for the top.IMO to each there own.

I bought my trunk rack for practical purposes for big TBN events, when I come home with more than I left. Oh - and today I drove Goldi for the first time with it on, and was stopped by no less than 5 people who thought it was gorgeous. One gentleman's remark, "It sure does give it a very classic '50's look! Very nice lines!" And he wanted to know where I got it.

The rack is NOT for everyone. It's for those of us who know we won't be able to get everything in the trunk on a particular outing, and chose not to drive the family truckster.

It's the over the top, out of the shute, controversial tone that most people do not like. I know a lot of people that think pin stripes ARE tacky. I am not one of them but to each his own. Easy to take a shot at strangers. As we attend events many of us have become friends and we treat each other with respect. I did not purchase a trunk rack but I am not about to make a fool of myself by condeming those who did.

I'm single with just one person to consider, so I do not need a luggage rack. However, I understand those who do use their cars for touring and find it necessary to pack for two. It's scary sometimes--the fact that some view with derision the desires and needs of others. I prefer my car detailed and looking its best without after-market accessories, including pinstriping, but I do not begrudge those among us who enjoy customizing their vehicles. In fact, I have enjoyed many of the pictures posted by owners who have added custom touches to their vehicles. I especially like the wire wheels many have added.
