  • Hard acceleration causes a "smell" Help!!

I've been enjoying my '04 Merlot with sand t-bird 4 months now. My only complaint is a strong burning rubber or sulphur smell after I put the pedal to the metal. When I pull over and pop the hood there is no smoke or smell coming from the engine compartment. But I have the smell inside the car. I goes away within minutes but I'm very concerned about it. Does anyone have updated info on this "stinky smell" problem?? My bird has 21,000 mmiles on it.

    thanks for any info!! Tom

I'd change the cabin filter first. May be clogged with some "unsavory" items.

      Hi Tom,

What you are smelling is normal. It is the exhaust byproducts from your catalytic converter. All new vehicles with catalytic converters produce the hydrogen sulphide smell some worse than others.

Don't be so sure. I don't get that smell & haven't heard anyone else complain. Maybe an exhaust leak?

If you do a search there have been many complaints.

It doesn't always happen on hard acceleration, but it can happen occasionally and is not a sign of anything wrong with the car.

Hi Tom, I agree with Donald. I get that rotten egg smell from my bird once in a while. Most often when it is in hard pull on a long incline in the mountains. But it quickly goes away.

Tom, I have had this smell from day one of owning my Bird starting back in Jan. 2002 and still get it when I put the peddle to the medal. Nothing to worry about.

                  Hi there,

Just an alternative thought. I've noticed a funny smell sometimes when the AC is switched on for the first time after no use for a while which is coming in through the air vents. Might be worth checking.

An engine produces the most pollutants at idle and under hard acceleration. If you want to experiment with this:
                    1. Drive your car for several miles at sustained highway
                    speeds.
                    2. Then slow down to a very low speed .
                    3. Now try your pedal to the metal stunt.
                    4. Observe the exhaust odor.
                    5. Now do some stop-light driving and allow the engine to
                    idle frequently.
                    6. Do another hard acceleration
                    7. Isn’t the exhaust odor much worse this time?

I personally have really experienced this situation when noticing
a highway patrol car that has set idling in the median for some time and then watch him whiz by on the interstate in the three digit speeds.

Guess I need to get mine checked out for the lack of odor. Could also be that I'm driving fast enough to outrun the smell.

I loved Gene's solution. Just out run it.

I had a terrible odor too after a couple of bean burrito's, but I did go an extra forty miles before I needed to stop for gas...
