....was on the I-net today trying to find a cut-away of the 3.9 V8...no luck...so..has a anyone replaced the presumably serpentine drive belt....and also, are the camshafts belt driven or gear driven?....leading to the question...oop! 100.000mi. gotta change the cam belt, so important on the offshore powerplants.....Notice how there isn't a specific service schedule for Thunderbirds...just the generic Ford schedule?....nothing specific in the owners handbook....but I have seen Dealer printed schedules to maximize revenues.....

Re: ....couple of questions.....
Hi Martin,
Glad to hear you made it through the cold!! I made some smarta%% comment last time about the chinooks and don't think we've had one since!!!
The cams are chain driven. If you take a look at the pdf on this link (page 6 of the pdf I believe) you can get an inside view. This was a write-up I did on the process to replace a valve cover gasket. Hope this helps. If you can't access the file let me know and I will send it to you

Martin:
I decided to replace the serpentine belt on my '05 at 44,000 miles. It began each start up with a neat chirping sound that began to get on my nerves after a while. I tried belt dressing but it was only temporary relief. The belt didn't look glazed but last month while I had it in the dealer for service I bit the belt bullet.
The belt was $75 (JK 6-917 V-Belt) and after I looked over the task I asked the dealer for the install cost and it was $57.... I figured my blood pressure may not hold up if I did it, so I spent $132 and had them do it all.

Re: ....couple of questions.....
buddy, the 3.9L in the Thunderbird is a dirivative of the 4.0 Jag engine but not interchangeable due to electronics & heads & mounts & computer involved. The Tbird engine was built here in the states and the Jag engine was built separately in Wales. I think my sister's Jag is a 2001 with the 4.0 in it - can't remember the model she has.Last edited by 5bird7; Mar 14, 2009, 01:32 PM.Limited Edition databases for 007 msg..#26 , PCR sticky, and Cashmere msg.#64
