Ouch! My mother did that once with her one-week-old Cadillac. She sold that car eight years ago, but she still hasn't forgiven herself. To make sure it never happened again, I moved the sensors from their usual eight-inch height to about a foot and a half so they are level with the part of the bumper that sticks out on most vehicles. Installing a bracket that moves the sensors away from the door and thus require greater horizontal clearance is another suggestion.

Some newer garage door models have, in addition to the light sensors, a pressure sensor that will send the door back up if it detects something stopping it before it hits the ground. A combination of relocated sensors and the pressure-sensing motors should drastically reduce the chance of such a thing happening again.

Like I said, one inch farther in and this would have been a non-event. The nose is barely noticeable and the grill is also barely noticeable. But "I" know it's there and "I" know the big dummy who put it there.

OUCH-Marty, know that was a heartbreaker...
Tell you a little story....
Sheila had an '06 White Diamond CTS...Sheila came in the garage nose first, got out and hit the button on the way into the house...Came back out a second later because she thought she heard the door go back up...So she hit the button again and walked back into the house...Then I, "Mr. you did what", went out in the garage and noticed the garage door up, so I hit the button and went back in the house...Returned back to garage to put back up whatever I went out for...Hmmmm, garage door still up, what the heck????
So "Mr. I never do wrong", hits the button again and guess what????...I stand there and watch and its coming down on the rear bumper hitting it and going back up...So Sheila & I both hit that button numerous times before figuring out what was happening...Very nasty little gash on the rear bumper and we both were heartbroken over the gash and both being "IDIOTS"...And ,yes, one inch more and it wouldn't have touched it...
So don't beat yourself up too terribly hard....SH*T HAPPENS TO US ALL!!!!!
We were able to laugh about it later and it reminded us of the tv commercial about the guy trying to figure out what his switch controlled...

We just nailed a 2X4 on the floor to drive into so the garage door clears the car. But once we put the car in the garage and the door went back up and I thought I hit Rosebud, but I knew I was up to the 2X4 but I looked at the car for a scrach and found none so hit the closer agin just to have it get down to about the trunk level and go back up. Agin I checked and no damage. Thats when I found the light sensers were out of alignment, was I glad to fine that.
