if you will notice the right lower corner of attached picture there is a tiny hole in the top ... that's the result of the spring loaded "catch" in the upper left of the picture. the spring sticks out a little and acts like a pin, digging a hole in the top.
My fix was to put the top half open, take some wire cutters and cut off the excess amount of spring that was causing the problem .. about 1/8 an inch...
