  • Buying a T'Bird

Im new to your site and throughly enjoy sofar!
I am in the market to buy a Thunderbird simply to use as a vacation car!
Anyone have any suggestions for buying off E-Bay? I know I am going to have to spend a bit to get what I want where ever I buy it and I dont mind it just seems E-Bay has the best selection. I want for sure below 50K miles with a black interior Definately Not a two tone. Did Ford ever put out a solid color interior other than Black? Also did they ever sell one without the hardtop? As for exterior Red, Yellow or Blue maybe - quality amd millage will over rule color. (although I would like a red one HaHa).
Seems all of them come fully decked out with few if any options - only thing I have seen that might be extra is heated seats?!?!

Any and all help will be Gratefully Appreciated!
    Thanks So Much
    TG

Welcome to the nest there Ted. Might I direct you to one of our member's sites www.portholeauthority.com. On that site you can see the colors, the combos, the options.

Many Thuderbirds have only the soft top and getting one with less than 50K will not be difficult at all. Enjoy the search and watch this site for Thunderbirds for sell as well.

        Hi Ted,

Welcome to TBN, full of loads of info and nice people.

E-bay would work but you might want to try 'cars.com'. Choose used cars, type in the years you are interested in and the radius from Columbia that you are prepared to travel, is that near Nashville. If you were prepared to travel 100 miles, that would cover all Tennessee I guess, parts of Alabama and into Georgia.

Thats how I found our 2003 all black. We live in North Georgia and we found ours in Atlanta, 90 miles south.

Generally, you should be able to get a good example with miles 20,000 to 30,000 for between $20k and $25k. It all depends on the condition and the dealerships flexability to deal.

        Good luck, Gordon.

I bought mine in October and found it on Vehix.com. Sounds alot like cars.com. Good luck, they're a great car. I passed two teenagers driving through Lancaster, PA a couple of weeks ago and heard them call it a 'cool car' - BTW, the window was down.

                  Re: Buying a T'Bird

rewog, I would look for an 05. they're the real 50 year aniversory model, 55 to 05, and may have better resale value in years to come. Low miles is always a plus and if you can find one that the original Ford Factory warranty has been extended on, that's a big plus because it can be transfered over into your name at no cost to you, for the remainder of the warranty. I think you'll probably find the best price on Ebay. If you do buy from a dealer try to stay with Ford dealers and look for a one owner trade-in with a clean Car-Fax report. If you find the car you want and it has a hard top and you don't want it, you can always sell it for as much as a couple grand depending on condition and color. If you do buy one with the hard top have them take it off for you and watch how it's done, make sure you get the stand and cover for the hard top, then check the operation and condition of the soft top and be sure that the boot is there and check the snaps for any rips around them. Some of the sand colored soft tops get stains and mildew on them. Check the battery, it's in the trunk, make sure it's a vented battery and it's installed right. Good Luck & wecome to TBN. Leroy

                    Re: Buying a T'Bird

If you buy on ebay get an independent inspection report before the auction ends. I used these guys and they went out to check the car and had pictures and written report emailed the day after I called!
cheap price for peace of mind!

                    SGS Vehicle Inspections offer:
                    • Nationwide staff of trained inspectors
                    • Inspections performed wherever you are - home, office, or any convenient location
                    • Thorough but rapid inspections
                    • Reports available online within 24 hours of your inspection
                    • 150-point condition report (See a sample report)
                    • Interior and exterior photography

I used the following to ship the car from OK to OH for less than $500.00
                    • DAS owns and operates its own fleet
                    • DAS has dedicated customer service reps
                    • DAS provides online satellite tracking
                    • DAS provides choice of open or enclosed carriers
                    • DAS offers true Door-to-Door service options
                    Both are advertised on ebay.
                    Happy Bird HUNTING!

PS: Not solid color interior but close?
One of the reason's I bought my PCR!

There is a Ford dealer in Jones Oklahoma just East of Oklahoma City that usually has a number of thunderbirds in stock. http://overallford.dealerconnection.com/?lang=en

Just looked and he has four with low mileage 2 2004 25,327 and 16,004 and 2 2005 a silver with 15,310 and a Cashmere with 12,4446 his asking price for the two 2005s are in the upper $27 and low $28 might be a little high, but then again this is on his web site.

Don't know anything about him other than he seems to keep a number of birds on the lot.

Good luck in your search, know you are going to love whatever you get.

I am in Oklahoma City and would be glad to check out any of the Birds in Jones. The last time I was by there he had 6 on the lot.
Leaving for Hot Springs in the morning, but can check them next week.

If you want me to, PM me your phone number and I can call you from the dealer to talk about them.

                          Re: Buying a T'Bird

Thanks to ALL you Guys for your help and Support - What a Great Group you are!
I got the Suprise of my life this morning around 9:00 - I thought I was going to Break the refresh button on my computer!
                          I had found a 2005 on e-bay with decent milage 39K.
Last week - I called the dealer who had it listed to ask additional questions like - was it a non-smoker vehicle (yes), any glass or paint damage (no glass but two small paint chips on the front of the hood - not bad or a deal breaker) Was there a CarFax (yes and it was clean) The salesman said it was even "certified" at their dealership - (for what that was worth). How many owners (one) Found out it did not have a hardtop - This is why I ask you guys initially.
All in all answers were favorable - So I decide to bid $19,000 just to see what happens - even bid using my wifes Antique Account because she has 100% feedback!
You guessed it I was high bidder Sight unseen WOWWWWWWWW.
Guys I honestly thought it would go for around $22K as it was a 2005 and 39,000 is not really a Lot of miles - after all I am going to drive the heck out of it but just on Vacation and Special Events - I just didnt want 70 or 80K miles so I wouldnt be stuck with a 100,000 mile car after a few years!
Now I have to figure how to get to Miami Fla and back - Guess an Old Fashion ROADTRIP! Heck of an exchuse for a Vacation to the Keys Huh?
I will also get a quote from the Hauler - one of you suggested! Wish I had had time to get an inspection But OH WELL But who would have thought!
Again Thanks to ALL of you - And Wish me Luck - I sure hate buying anything sight unseen but guess you have to trust some one sometime!
                          Later
                          TG
P/S Any suggestions on What color top should I try to find? Seems to me a White or Black would really set it off! I do want a hard top and will get one some color soon!
                          Thanks Again

Ted, White or black hardtop goes with just about any color.

Since the Ford dealer says it's certified - you might be able to get a Ford extended warranty on the car so do ask about that.

So, what color did you end up winning?
