  • Dream comes true - we got our VMG!!!

I never dared hope I'd be making this post, but we have our dream car at last!

The whole thing went down in less than 24 hours and was totally unplanned. It has been an exhausting frenzy, quite honestly.

What happened was we got talking about the T again after many months of not even looking for or discussing cars. On a whim Wednesday I searched Auto Trader and a new listing with no pictures came up for a 2004 VMG about 400 miles away.

It was a dealership so we contacted them for more info. They sent pics and overall the car looked good; however, it had a black hardtop and not white as we hoped.

The price was also way too high, even by dealer standards. So we planned to go see it, but I spent a lot of time compiling stuff for comparison to show the dealership they were overpriced by a country mile.

In that process, I came across a private individual ad for another VMG with a white hardtop in CA. Low miles, one owner, CARFAX, the works. And a price that seemed too good to be true. I told hubby that it was surely gone by now but he wanted to call anyway and find out more details.

So he called Wed. night and lo and behold, she still had the car BUT a number of people were coming to see it the next day. He talked to the owner a long time and had a good feeling. When he hung up he told me, "Get me a plane ticket" and at first I thought he was joking, but by 9 a.m. Thursday we were waiting for the credit union doors to open, then we rushed in and got the cashier's check and a letter confirming it was good, and we dashed to the airport and I dropped hubby at the terminal curb.

It was long day waiting for the outcome. He had requested and the prior owner agreed to take it to an independent mechanic first. She even offered to pick him up at the airport though it was a bit of a drive for her.

I was on pins and needles back home because as she was headed to the airport to pick him up in the car, I talked to her at one point on the phone, and she started crying over selling the car. I was afraid she was going to back out at the last minute.

Then I heard nothing for hours. (I had my hands full here though as our water heater died and we were on our third day of no hot water. The plumber had finally fit us in and some other contractors showed up too, which kept me from stewing/pacing too much )

Late last night, hubby called and said everything went through and he was already halfway to Vegas headed home. It's a two-day drive back but even factoring in the gas, mechanic, and airfare, we still got a jewel of a deal.

Best of all, we got the exact car in the color combo we wanted (VMG with the white top.) It has the standard black interior, so according to the Porthole stats, it is only one of two made in that combination.

Of course we'll post pics as soon as she's home and safely nestled in our garage. It still seems unbelievable, especially since we weren't even that focused on finding one at this point. I had almost given up in fact.

I added her to the registry. I can't wait to see, touch, and drive her.

Besides my husband, you all here are the first to know the story and the outcome.

    Cheers!

Congrats Pat! That is a great story! Reading your post and seeing the excitement in it reminded me of how I felt waiting for mine to get to the dealership!
Again congrats and enjoy! You will find lots of love with the car, even if you have minor issues you will still love it!

          Thanks all!
Wow, Raven, I hadn't even thought about St. Pat's connection...kind of cool though, as that is how I got my name too. I was named for my aunt Patricia who was born on March 17.
Not to mention Julep (how can I give her any other name now?) is green, too!

Congratulations! Patty. All the names involved are fitting for this week - we even named our "lovebird" (a real live green bird), Patty because she flew into us the day before St. Patrick's Day. You'll love your Mint Julep - hope your husband has a great trip and took a camera with him! (or you can tell him to pick up one of those cheap throwaway cameras for the rest of the trip home - and use it on the trip)

              Well done Pat,

When things happen like that, it's just like fate happening. You were both obviously meant to have that car!

Enjoy, it's getting to that topless time of year again.

Yes, he remembered to take a camera, and our new video camera, too. The previous owner mentioned she had no pictures of her with the car and he took some and is going to email them to her when he gets back. That's the sort of sentimental sweetie he is.

And speaking of sweeties, I really appreciated your help the other day. ----<@

Awesome story Pat!!! It renews the excitement I think we all felt when we first knew we would be taking delivery of one of these great cars.

                  Congrats!!!

WoW, Imagine that, on a whim, and it was meant to be. Same thing happened to me. Looked all over the place, for any color as long as I got a Bird. They were to expensive or the people just wouldn't deal. This went on for 2 years. I had a Mercedes and a SAAB, single and who needs a 3rd car. So I though I would never get one at the price I wanted, dealers found that out 10 times. Bottom line, one day I told my GF lets go get a burger. We got there ordered, sat down, finished, got in the explorer, she was driving, as we pulled out something yellow cough my eye from the car dealers lot across the street. Ate at my soul all the way home, so I called and asked, what the yellow car was. 2002TBird he said. Asked how much, way to high, he said I will deal ,I sell cars. Said be right over again. And he did deal,so when it's your time , it's your time. I drove it home.
We all want to see the photos of your TBird Pat.

Congratulations! Welcome to the fold. Now you can get an appreciation for those of us that waited 6-12 monthsw or more to get our cars after they were ordered from the factory. It is worth whaterver the wait to get what you want. Especially to get one of these fabulous cars. Have fun!!

Congrats, Pat! I'm excited for you and, like others have mentioned, your story made my heart race thinking back to the day I first saw mine (it was supposed to be a surprise, but I knew it was coming - I still almost passed out when I saw her).

Thanks all! Hubby just called from somewhere in the desert southwest; he is having a blast cruising home. Says the weather is beautiful and so is the car. Now, you know this one is supposed to be mine but I have a feeling I'm going to have to arm-wrestle him for it! ;)
