  • What made me decide I wanted a Thunderbird...

Someone asked me the other day what it was that made me decide that I wanted a Thunderbird, instead of, say, a Corvette or a Mustang. I didn't have to think about it for a minute.

One of the reasons I decided I liked TBirds was that my family had one when I was a kid - maybe 5 or 6. It was a blue early 60's bird (maybe 61-62?), and I have distinct memories of my dad driving that car and working on it.

I remember he loved that car. He'd had it for about 10 years. He used to let me ride with him all over the place with it, and even sneak and let me sit in his lap and turn the steering wheel, while he worked the peddles and brakes, out on some of the old country dirt roads near the house. He'd have caught hell from my mother if she'd have found out about that! He died in 1974 when I was 7, and I've always remembered his fondness for that car when I think about him.

Because of that, I always wanted one, so when the retro birds came out, I followed the news articles and ads with great interest. I was still active duty Air Force when they came out, and I couldn't really afford one at the time. When I retired from the AF in 2006, I told my wife that's what I wanted when I got out and got "a real job". We bought the 02 Torch Red in the summer of 07, and just recently swapped it for the 05 Medium Steel Blue.

Anyway, the best reason for me - and the real reason I bought the MSB recently - was that it reminded me of my dad. He would have been 67 today. I sure do miss him....but I think about him everytime I get into that little blue tbird. This weekend, I'm going to take Sam, my 5-year old grandson, for a drive in the bird. And, if I find an old back country dirt road....

    Hey Bobby,

Are you sure you want to take your new bird onto a 'country dirt road'. A nice paved private driveway might be better, stone chips you know....

Have a great weekend, we are having two of our grandkids this weekend as well.

    Gordon.

      Hey Bobby,

Yours is one of the best reasons I've ever heard to have a Tbird. What a great post and wonderful tribute to your dad on the date of his birth.

Weeeellllll...no I don't really want to take it out on a dirt road, but most folks don't like to see a 5-year old in the driver's seat on a public hiway! Maybe he can steer just in the driveway!

What a great story, and very well-written, too!

I love to hear how people came to adore or crave owning a certain car. I think it's wonderful that you will always honor your dad whenever you drive your blue steel beauty.

          Many happy miles,

Hey, Bobby, if you haven't heard the song "Silver Thunderbird", you would love it. It's about a kid's dad and his Thunderbird. By the guy who did "Walking In Memphis". Mark somebody. It's great, check it out.

                  Hi Bobby -
Good writeup, and I wonder how many of us have similar memories. Growing up in WV, My father would often put me on his lap and let me steer the car while he worked the peddles and gear shifter.

My mom use to keep Trans-Am cars when I was growing up. My dad use to keep Mustangs, and still does. I didn't want either car, but I was really wanting a good convertible. I wanted to start my own trend. I had certain requirements, so was careful to look at several types of cars.

After searching many different cars, the Thunderbird met most all of the criteria. I wanted a really long, low car. Something classy, sporty, and comfortable. Something two seater, but with a good size trunk when the top is down. And, affordable. This turned out to be that car (okay, i purchased used, it was very affordable). I haven't looked back. It turns heads. Its a real keeper.

Re: What made me decide I wanted a Thunderbird...

My T-Bird story also involves my Dad. When I was born, my parents had a '74 Bird (I think that's the right year) that brought me home from the hospital. We were a Ford family, and I learned to drive Ford trucks on the farm at the ripe old age of about 8. They had a '91 Bird at some point while I was growing up, and I decided I wanted one for my first car. We didn't have tons of money, so my Dad bought me an '86 that had been wrecked, and he and a friend rebuilt it until it looked like new. Although I loved that car, I think he always felt bad he couldn't buy a new one at that point.

Years later, I fell in love with the Retro-Birds but was in law school and certainly couldn't afford one. I wouldn't graduate until 2006 and was distraught that I wouldn't be able to buy a new one after graduation since they stopped making them in '05. During all those years, Mom and Dad had worked their butts off, made some good business investments, and were fortunate enough to be able to afford one in '05, when they bought me the 50th Anniversary Limited Edition as an early graduation present.
My Dad and I are both "car people," so it was a very special moment especially for the two of us. Although both of my parents are still living, I will always cherish this car; it will never be sold; it will never be a daily driver; and it will remind me of them years in the future once they're gone.

Most of you who have been around here for a while have heard mine before ...

My favorite Aunt who broke all the rules, was single and happy when the norm was to get married and have babies, was a true lady: poised, pretty but very modest, she lived life for the minute and knew how to make a 6 year old she picked up from school everyday feel like the was the most important guy in her life ...

I can still picture her driving up in her red 65 with the white interior and the white top down just as pretty as the car.

I was the envy of every boy at Clyatteville Elementary and the love affair with a T-Bird was born.

My only regret is she passed away before I bought my 03 Raven and could take her for a ride.

Great reason to want a bird. Really pays Tribute to you Dad. I wanted a 55 Bird the first time I saw one. I worked as a mechanic for Chevrolet in the 60's and 70's and was the Vett mechanic, because no one else at the Dealership would work on them. They were miserable cars to work on and I guess that is the reason I have never been a Vette fan.

I wish I had such a touching story to tell.

I went to the dealer and put the key in the ignition. When the steering wheel moved into place I said, "I must have this." Simple and oh so "girly".

105,000 miles later, I can't imagine having anything else.
