Hi Gang, I have 140,000 miles on the Original Plugs, I called the Auto Parts store and they said there are about 15 different types to choose from what do you all think would work good in our Birds? Thank You, Rick

If the originals were good for 140,000 miles, why would you want to change to anything but original replacement "OEM" ?

Ford recomends spark plugs to be replaced at 100,000 miles, with the original Platinum-tipped plugs. They also recomend changing the engine coolant and inspecting the drive belts at 100,000 miles according to thier maintenance schedule. Leroy

Another note about replacing plugs. It might be cheaper to have someone other than a Ford dealer change your plugs but one thing to consider is that these plugs have to be tightened to a certain torque in the aluminum heads. Over or under torqueing them could cause a blow out. Leroy

I changed them Today with Autolite dual Platinum plugs, It was running real good for about 5 min. And the eng started to misfire and the eng light came on, I went to Auto Zone and they said # 7 COP is Bad and they also said that I had missing in other cylinders do to the Bad Boots that have gone bad, has anyone else heard about Bad Boots? Thanks again, Rick

Remember, the ONLY cops that will fit properly are the Ford ones. The autoZone cops sit too tall for the covers to be re-installed. I've been through all this aand finally went back to Ford for plugs and cops.

There was a problem with the aftermarket plugs too, but I can't remember what it was. It's probably on one of my posts on the cops thread.

The moral, at least for me, was to stick with Ford parts.

If you are going to install these yourself, be sure to purchase a tube of anti-seize. It is a good practice to put it on the threads when installing anything in alluminum to prevent stripping the threads.

                    Rick,

Was the car running fine before you changed plugs?

At that mileage you may have damaged the boots removing them. If you just replaced the boots first that could take care of the problem and be very inexpencixe. If that didn't work then go to the COPs.

Thanks to all, Scott found a place in CA for 24.95 ea, that is the cheapest so far. Thanks again for all your help, by the way the orig plugs I removed with 140,000 miles on them looked great hardly any wear what so ever, its a shame the cops don't last this long. Thanks again, Rick

For $24.95 ea. they're probably made in China. You get what you pay for. I would got to a Ford dealer and see what they offer, there are aftermarket COPs that are used in racing engines that might work and last longer? Leroy

                              I agree but
This has been talked about on the COP threads on Ford made or aftermarket, its sad to say but whats the difference in cheap junk our Motorcraft junk. A very large percentage of all our Thunderbirds came with parts made outside of the good ole U.S.A.

Plus it was nice of Ford to leave out our 2002 T-birds on this problem.

Its hard to find anything made here at home. I try to buy American made items. Gets harder every day. Rick let us know how it turns out
