  • So what exactly IS it about these cars?

    So what exactly IS it about retro birds that we like so much? After all, they aren't the fastest or most powerful cars on the road (but they still hold their own, in my opinion). They're not the sleekest, most high-tech, cool, or aerodynamic looking cars on the road either - there are cars out there that do look way cooler and are more high tech. They don't have GPS or MP3 player capabilities built-in. They have persistent COPS problems, and other nit-noid issues to contend with. So why do we like these cars?

    For me, I think these cars' personality has something to do with it.

    I really think these little cars have some personality to them. They're unique - they don't look like every other car on the road (like so many of them do these days), and while they may not be the fastest or most luxurious, they have the best combination of characteristics of a lot of other cars: they are quick, sporty, and have some degree of luxury to them.

    They're also versatile - you can mod it in so many ways, to suite your own tastes - you can't do that with most cars (the fact that you can swap the tops on them and get an entirely different looking car is great).

    I also like that they're also not as common as a Mustang or a Corvette, so you get the cool double-takes from folks who don't see them that often.

    One of the biggest things I also like about the cars really has nothing to do with the cars themselves - it's the people who drive them. People who like Thunderbirds seem to be a unique bunch; they're the kind of people that like to be different, like to have fun, they like the comraderie involved with other tbird owners.

    That's what I like about these little cars. So what is it YOU like about them, in particular?

    Nostalgia, fun, pride, 3-cars-in-1, uniqueness, mutual friends, TBN, and most of all SMILES - whenever I look at it parked in my garage, whenever I am cruising down the highway, and whenever anyone else smiles in return. :sun: It's a real joy to own and drive a Thunderbird, especially one of our retros.

      Bobby,

      I think you've hit the nail on the head with your observations. A couple of observations I would like to add is the aspect of having always adored the original 2-seater, as well as the association with the name and history. If you've read some of the other blogs about our adoration of these cars, you know that there were T-Birds from different eras in our past that meant a great deal to us. From the original, through the nineties when the name was dropped, we either owned one or knew someone who did, and loved it.

      Still, the looks and comments we get when we take the Bird out tell us that others love it too, but may not be in the position for it to be practical to purchase one, like we were decades ago, when we drooled every time a 55, 56 or 57 drove by.

        I think they are one of the coolest-looking cars on the road! I fell in love with the look and would stop to stare every time one drove by (which was sometimes dangerous if I was driving in the opposite direction ). I guess part of the attraction is that they are so unique and that you actually notice when one drives by, as opposed to other cars that are a dime a dozen on the road. The compliments and smiles from total strangers don't hurt, either!

          1. The ONLY car I have ever turned and looked at (sometimes twice) when I park it and leave it;
            .
          2. I can count the occurances on a single hand when I have seen more than one on a single day and you never meet one at the light much less traveling;
            .
          3. The name is an icon in American automotive history;
            .
          4. Who knows if and when FoMoCo will revive the 2 seater concept much less the Thunderbird mark again anytime soon;
            .
          5. Whenever I meet someone who stops and wants to talk about my Bird it seems they always have a fond T-Bird story: Their neighbor owned one when they were a kid; or a crazy uncle; or in my case a favorite aunt;
            .
          6. Can you think of any other car made within the last 10 years that you will get so many stares for the buck? You can buy a new Z06 Vette, 500SL, or Shelby Pony and pay big bucks but no one gives those the stare quotent you get with a T-Bird v. the price. I love the XLR but it can't compete with the Retros for attention.

          I met a real estate agent who was practically salivating over Suzy Sunday. After I chatted with her for a few minutes I realized she thought Suzy was a Early Bird ... Go Figure.

            What I have found, is that now that they are no longer in production, fewer & fewer people are aware of them. I'm constantly asked what kind of car it is, and who makes it. Truly unique, and I'm lovin' every minute of it!

              Re: So what exactly IS it about these cars?

              Hi there,

              Good question Bobby. I think I've touched on this before on an earlier thread but it fits here well. Growing up in England, I had always liked American sports cars, imparticular the Mustangs from the 60's.

              When I lived in Britain, owning an American car was expensive, hard to get parts and of course, they were thirsty for gas which was and still is very high priced over there compared to here.

              Anyways, on arriving in America, I thought, now's my chance to own a Mustang. After a while though, my love of the Mustangs changed a lot. Here, there are just loads of them about and they lost their novelty appeal that they had in Britain.

              I then decided to look for a hot rod of some kind. Problem, I could not find any in my price range that drove well. Some of them looked amazing but I wouldn't trust driving 400 interstate miles to the coast in any that we tried.

              It was my wife, Rachel who suggested looking at the Retro birds. Well, we loved the first one we drove. Tried three more after that but ended up getting the first one. Love it!

              I know I'm rambling here but one more quick thing. I've noticed quite often on these threads that the Retro is referred to as 'this little car'. To me, it still seems pretty big for a two seater. Course I grew up with MG's, TR6, Alfas and Fiats. Compared to most of them, they are big.

              All the best, Gordon. :sun:

                  For me...I think it's how I feel when I drive her. You can just enjoy driving for the sake of driving, not just because you need to get to one point from another. I honestly feel I have to get dressed up to go for a drive. And you know what??? I like how that makes me feel!
                  I think I have a crush on my car! LOL

                    Re: So what exactly IS it about these cars?

                    I can only speak for myself, but the first new T-bird I truly noticed was a VMG in passing, and after the scrumptious sherbet color, the cute little porthole caught my eye. I didn't think "Thunderbird" though; I actually thought it was some sort of exotic foreign sportscar. It was hubby who had to enlighten me
                    Years ago, in similar fashion I saw a Ford EXP on a college campus (two-seater sporty version of the Escort) and wanted it immediately. Those cars were scarce even at the time, and I suppose the two seats had limited market appeal. I lucked out and found one, though, being sold by a lady moving to Australia. It was nearly new without the new price. I had a blast with that EXP and I notice now that the shape is somewhat similar to the T-bird, so perhaps something about the profile appeals to me.
                    The other day when we took Julep for her first carwash here, I was in the passenger seat so I took special note of the double-takes and head-turns on the way there. I noticed almost every guy we passed stared or pointed. Not so much the women, or perhaps they are just more subtle about it!
                    "One mint T-bird was the cause of it all!"

                        Back when I was a kid, ('50's and '60's), Thunderbirds were my favorite cars, but I was way too young to own one, and I kept saying to myself ''One day, I'll have one like that!...'' and maybe that has something to do with the fact that love my T-Bird!...It's like a kid's dream finally come true!!

                          There are lots of great cars that drive by our house in the neighborhood- Cobras, Corvettes, classic Mustang, classic Camaro, Viper, custom 57 Chevy Wagon, many others. The new Thunderbird [back in May 2002] was the only car that made me stop, stare, drool, drive down into the cul-de-sac to see it again, and go home and log onto the internet and look at it on the Ford site for 3 hours. I bought mine 2 months later.
