My only opinion on the Thunderbird visors is that they are cheaply designed for this style of personal luxury car. If a future reupholstery job is ever in order on ours, the visors will be leather wrapped also.
If I remember right the Ford engineer that spoke to us at Destin said the sunvisors in our Thunderbirds are the same as some model Mustang. The said that they had to be small because of the rake of the windshield and some safety requirements, yada, yada. Bottom line it was a parts bin trick to save some money as the car was already way more expensive than originally advertised. Same reason they used the dash out of the LS - save money where they could.
When we were at Ford World Headquarters during Motown Thunder, Doug Gaffka, chief designer, told us they had to make compromises on the interior and trim pieces to keep the car in budget that he did not want to make. I'm sure the cheap sunvisors, lack of trip computer, compass, decent rearview mirror, and other minor omissions all fell into this category.

Another reason, I read someplace, that some of the parts in the T Bird are cheap is that Ford kept the car a mate to the LS so it would not get in the way of Jaguar sales, even though the LS and Bird are essentially Jaquar S cars under the skin.
