  • What's that thing behind the muffler?

When I removed my '05 exhaust sys to replace it with a Borla Cat-Back sys I noticed a round object, about the size of a frozen juice can, welded to the stock exhaust tube about 2 inches forward of the left muffler. I was told it's a "counter-balance weight." Can someone please tell me what it does? Should I have it welded to the Borla exhaust tube?

I don't have that on my 05 but it could be a resonator. I would not alter the Borla system, just install it as it directs.

It's not the resonator, it's attached to one of the resonators that has to be removed to install the Borla system. I don't know what its purpose is, but my car runs fine without it. Leroy

I wonder too? The thing has NO exhaust running through it. I agree it is about the size of a small frozen orange juice can?
I would think it is way too small to be any kind of counter balance
even if it were pure lead. When we took my Factory mufflers off my
friend ask "what is this motor for" He thought it was some type of
        electric motor?
It has to have a purpose but what I dont know?

mmmm...I never saw that on my car, but it's an '02...maybe they didn't have them...But I still don't know what it's for...A picture might help?...

Ski, if it's an afterburner, wouldn't engaging it cause the Bird to fly in tight little right hand circles?

                      1. That is correct.

                      2. Keeps the two sides of the exhaust OUT OF BALANCE so they do not create a harmonic resonance when they are subjected to the same vibrations from the muffler.

                      3. No

That makes sense...i've never seen one before. Interesting.

                          Thanks Wes,
I assume the Borla sys doesn't need the harmonic interruper because it has only 1 muffler.

It could be, but that was not what I was thinking. The stock resonators are larger and absorb more sound energy than the Borlas. In the resonator, sound energy is transfered to vibrational energy. Since the Borla transfers less sound to vibration the balancer really isn't needed.
