  • HOW TO LOCK YOUR CAR

This is very interestHow to Lock Your Car and Why
I locked my car --- as I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times.. I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. When I looked straight at them they did not unlock my car again. How to lock your car safely - While traveling, my son stopped at a roadside park. He came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later and found someone had gotten into his car, and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator briefcase, you name it. He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into, the police told him that there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device.

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom, and have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to
manually lock your car door, by hitting the Lock button inside the car. Make sure you have your keys. That way, if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim it will not be you. When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be stolen. Something totally new to us...and real.Be aware of this and please pass this note on. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote, just to be sure we remembered to lock them, and bingo someone has our code --- and whatever was in the car, can be stolen.
Snopes - Approved. Please share with everyone you know... Good information!!!

Soo. I checked out Snopes reply
    http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/lockcode.asp
After scrolling thru 3 different cases, they finally give their result - yes, possible with 80s tecnology cars but NO, our cars are current technology and the possiblity of that happening with our tbirds in a parking lot in a short time frame is nilche.

Thanks for the post, Ron. I always lock my cars on the door before getting out, never with the remote, but this is good info to know.

That cop is conning your son or mistaken. While that is theoretically possible the technology needed would be so expensive that they would probably be using it to steal a whole lot more important stuff than a trip computer and laptop.

Just my opinion, but it seems to be confirmed by Snopes that this is very unlikely and that they never approved any such email or message.

Re: HOW TO LOCK YOUR CAR

Strange...Yesterday I left the super market and started the car (not the TBird) and the dash message center said "Theft attempted". The alarm wasn't going off so I got out, walked around and no clues....then left.
That's never happened to me before.

The audible alarm would have stopped after a minute and reset itself. Don't know how if would have tripped in the first place though. One of my past Caddy's had an impact sensor....if someone opened a door into it or bumped it, the alarm would go off. Do you think you have one of those?

Re: HOW TO LOCK YOUR CAR

I have never noticed this message, but I have twice left the trunk ajar. It doesn't stay up far enough to notice (unless you look for it), but if it is lifted to slam it, it will set off the alarm, which will then reset. I walked up to the car and slammed the trunk lid, which, of course, set off the alarm.

              Logical explanation, so probably wrong.

No motion sensor alarm Barb. Just the standard Caddy alarm.
Joe, I've had Caddys almost forever and have never seen that message appear on any of them

Re: HOW TO LOCK YOUR CAR

George, could someone have tried the handle, found it locked and walked away? Would that justify the message? I know there are people/thieves who check cars to see if they are locked.

Good thought Marilyn but I doubt it. I've tried to open the doors a few times, forgetting that they were locked, and never got that message.

If it HAD happened that way, George, is it possible your delay in actually unlocking the car (hour or so) could have triggered the message? Normally, I would assume, whenever you forgot the doors were locked, you would have immediately unlocked them, thus deleting any warning. In the case of a thief trying the handle, if may have been quite some time before you returned to your car. I'd be curious if you tested it that way. (Guess you can tell, I like puzzles, haha, but this is my only guess.) Sure hope you find the answer.

                        Hi all!

This may be a bit of a rabbit trail...but...when I use the keyless to unlock my 02 T-bird, only the driver's side unlocks: does anyone know if this is programable, so that both doors unlock? Incidentally, when I use the driver's-side electric lock button, both doors unlock.

Jim's right, you have to push the button a second time to unlock the passenger door.
