You picked the right web site to ask for opinions, plenty of em here lol. I prefer the OEM chrome grill over any other option I've seen, mine will stay that way. I will say that when I painted it black as the NASCAR BIRD for Thunder Fever, it gave the car a more aggressive look from the front.

I think someone called Mr. Grill offers a billet grill that comes in a chrome or stainless steel and a black finish, and someone awhile back posted a thread about how difficult it was too install. I think they really change the apperance of the car and would appear to be alot harder to keep clean, and free of bugs, than the stock grill. But I guess if you're going to put a bunch of other junk on your car, you might as well put one of these on too. Leroy

Dennis, solid thumbs up from my corner. I too want a different look from all that chrome.

I do not think I would do that but at the end of the day it is your car & if you like it then that is all that matters. Finding a cashmere top might prove to be a bit difficult however.

I have a Cashmere Bird and live in Austin. Sometime we can get together and put my top on your black Bird. Then you will know how it looks.

Dennis, the look you describe doesn't appeal to me but like everyone said, it's your car and if you like it then go for it.

How about those new mud flaps and those Thunderbird stickers from TBC. Today is the last day I think. Leroy

I have an extra "egg crate" grille if you are interested. It has some scuffing on the nose where the garage door came down on it, but if you were thinking of painting it over then it might make a good candidate. Asking $100 for it.

You asked for opinions on your planned modification of the grill. Although I think it is your car to do with as you please, I have a suggestion you might want to consider. LEAVE IT ALONE! The eggcrate grill speaks strongly to Thunderbird heritage. The key to the Thunderbird's timeless appeal is its understated elegance. The design is clean, simple, elegant and cool as conceived by Ford. The aftermarket billet grill is heavy-handed and awkward. It stops the eye at the grill and cheapens the overall appearance of the car. The Thunderbird is a personal luxury car that was designed to have a restrained appearance. That's why the '55-'57 Thunderbirds still look so good today. They eschewed all the chrome so popular in their day for a crisp look that is still appealing a half century later.

I agree with eboose. The egg crate is the Thunderbirds 'simple string of pearls" When i first got mine I was excited about doing some appearance mods, but the longer i have it the more i appreciate the ford design team.
By all means to each their own, I love some of those mods on YOUR cars.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts most informative. Pretty much spit between the purest and the mod squad. I'm going to do the mod and keep the ome grill, if I ever sell I'll return it to original. Will post pics when finshed.

You have to be the one that decides what you want .
What ever you decide I am sure you will scratch your head and say why did I do that.
                              LOL
But like any change it has to grow on you at times and after few months you do not like what you did you can put it back to stock...

I know I am an old fuddy duddy and sometimes see a conspiracy where there is none....but it seems to me that it is pretty well known that fooling around with stock usually does not improve the looks of the the car or the resale value....kind of like a tatoo...if you like it, go for it but you know as well as anybody that it is a tatoo and not something that is going to improve with time....so mess with the standard parts and those who hang on to stock will someday, eons and eons hence, reap the benefits of hanging on to what what was right to start with. Advice to destroy stock will increase the value of the cars of those who do not. Hey, its only a car, right?
